The Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona is proud to announce a faculty search for the John Paul Schaefer Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences, a position that will target expanding the college’s prestigious program in Optical Physics.

The Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona is world renowned for the outstanding breadth and depth of its research and education programs in Optical Sciences. Optics resides at the core of many critical science and technology fields, from fundamental discovery in optical physics to engineering innovations enabling biomedicine, remote sensing, communications, energy, manufacturing and more.

The college’s program in Optical Physics is one of our four research focus areas, focusing on fundamental studies of the nature of light and light-matter interactions. Current faculty research in optical physics includes experimental and theoretical investigations of ultra-fast laser physics, frequency comb spectroscopy, high-field laser physics and ultra-high nonlinear propagation, many-body semiconductor photonics, Bose-Einstein condensates, quantum optomechanics, and quantum information and control.

The John Paul Schaefer Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences seeks to bolster our strengths and collaborative potential in these areas, while also potentially establishing new directions of research in areas including atomic and molecular optics (AMO), quantum optical sensor physics, and optical metamaterials. The optical physics group also enjoys opportunities for collaborations with our other three research focus areas of Photonics, Image Science, and Optical Engineering, and often benefits from large multi-university programs including MURIs and our lead role in the recently announced Center for Quantum Networks (CQN), one of the four new NSF Gen 4 Engineering Research Centers in the USA. This position is viewed as suitable for senior and highly promising mid-career individuals, with examples including current Associate Professors, Full Professors, or equivalent positions at non-academic institutions. Assistant Professors who have demonstrated outstanding success are also invited to apply. Tenure/Tenure Track (T/TE) candidates will be considered.
