*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) invites applicants for a 5-year, fixed-term position at the rank of Project Assistant Professor to conduct STEM gender research within Prof. Yokoyama’s group (https://member.ipmu.jp/hiromi.yokoyama/en/index.html). Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in the field of Science and Technology Studies, Psychology, Educational Psychology, Education Economics, or a closely related field of science.

Kavli IPMU is an international research institute with the goal of discovering the fundamental laws of the universe through the synergistic perspectives of physics, mathematics, statistics and astronomy. The successful candidate is expected to research gender inequalities in these fields. Research conducted by Prof. Yokoyama’s group has found the social climate of Japan and England contributes to a masculine image of these fields. Kavli IPMU is promoting research to clarify the cause of this situation in Japan by conducting a comparative survey with overseas countries. Applicants are required to have demonstrated experience in international STEM diversity research and analysis of large-scale data using statistical methods. It is desirable that the applicants can read Japanese, but it is not an essential qualification. Fluency in English is required.

Candidates should demonstrate the potential to take a leading role in evidence based research on the diversity in STEM in Japan. The successful candidate will be expected to engage with the wider Kavli IPMU community, through daily tea-time interactions, giving lectures to Kavli IPMU members, and holding events related to their research.

We seek to build a diverse, highly interactive membership, and female and international applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. Kavli IPMU is on the Kashiwa campus of the University of Tokyo. More than a half of its full-time scientific members come from outside Japan.

The application should include a CV, research statement, publication list, and at least three letters of recommendation. They should be uploaded at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/18617/apply. The search is open until filled, but for full consideration applications and letters should be submitted by August 31st, 2021. The expected start date of this position is from October 1st, 2021.
