Case Western Reserve University Department of Physics seeks candidates with a commitment to high quality teaching for a Lecturer position, targeted to begin August 2021. Candidates will be expected to teach both introductory and advanced undergraduate courses, and may have the opportunity to teach at the graduate level if they desire. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester during the academic year, with no teaching expected during the summer. Candidates complementing the department’s strategic initiative in physics AI are particularly encouraged.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with theoretical, experimental and observational faculty, research staff and students in the Department of Physics, and will have the opportunity to extend those interactions to colleagues in other departments individually and through existing interdisciplinary structures. The department has three strategic research thrust areas: biophysics/imaging/soft matter, particle astrophysics and cosmology, and quantum materials and devices.

The department is working vigorously to increase and support diversity among its faculty and students, including as an American Physical Society Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance Network institution and an APS-Bridge Partner Institution, and particularly encourages and welcomes applications from candidates who would advance that effort. Applicants are asked to submit a “diversity statement” explaining how they value diversity, equity, and inclusion within their teaching, research and discipline(s) and how their own scholarly work might contribute to structural justice inside and outside institutions of higher learning. This statement should also suggest how the candidate’s work, while as a member of Case Western Reserve University, will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and how moving forward they intend to foster a culture of diversity, pluralism, and individual difference.

Qualifications for the position include a Ph.D. or equivalent in physics or a closely related discipline. Candidates must have a record of high quality teaching or a strong interest in teaching and possess the skills needed to be an effective instructor. The appointment will be for a one-year period with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional one-year periods. Information about our department is available on the website http://physics.case.edu.

To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by June 29, 2021. However, applications will be accepted for the duration of the search. Applicants should apply to this position at: http://apply.interfolio.com/87488. Applicants will be prompted to provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a list of publications, statement of teaching, statement of diversity, and contact information for two professional references (letter-writers will submit their confidential letters directly through the online application.) If electronic submission is not possible, paper applications may be submitted to “Lecturer Search” Department of Physics, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio 44106-7079 USA. Questions regarding the search may be directed to Prof. Idit Zehavi at idit.zehavi@case.edu.
