The Nuclear and Particle Physics Software (NPPS) Group in the BNL Physics Department is an international leader in scientific software development at the most challenging scales. The group collaborates on a growing number of experiments including the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in Europe; the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB accelerator in Japan; the DUNE experiment in the US, including the ProtoDUNE experiment at CERN in Europe; the STAR, PHENIX and sPHENIX experiments at BNL's RHIC heavy ion collider; and the future electron-ion collider (EIC). Position Description

The NPPS group is building a DUNE software team and has an opening for a Research Associate to work on critical elements of future DUNE research using data from the ProtoDUNE experiment. This involves the first steps of data processing which are foundational to improving the physics performance from the detector, covering signal processing, calibration, and reconstruction. As a Research Associate on the team, you will work on the calibration and reconstruction of HEP experiment data, specifically liquid argon TPC detectors and their electronics. Novel techniques, including machine learning algorithms, are particularly important for reconstructing and analyzing ProtoDUNE and DUNE data. Working with experts in this field will give you opportunities to further advance your competencies. You will apply existing AI/ML techniques to ProtoDUNE data, explore other novel techniques and develop calibration strategies with the goal of defining strategies for the DUNE experiment that will optimize its physics performance. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community. The new team member will be based either at BNL or CERN. In this role, you will: • Develop and integrate calibration strategies for the DUNE experiment using ProtoDUNE data • Contribute to the development and application of AI/ML reconstruction techniques • Work on specific physics analysis topics and publications in physics and/or scientific computing • Work collaboratively in a team-based research environment • Play an important role in optimizing DUNE physics performance Basic Qualifications: • PhD in experimental particle physics, nuclear physics, or a related field • Demonstrated experience in writing C++ or Python to study and interpret data • Clear and concise written and interpersonal communication skills • The ability to understand and solve complex problems as part of a team Other Information: • Occasional domestic and international travel • Initial 3-year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding • Research Associate appointments are made to candidates who have earned a PhD within the past five years or will complete their degree prior to starting the position • The selected candidate will report to Paul Laycock; all potential candidates are encouraged to contact Paul (laycock@bnl.gov) with any questions regarding the position • In addition to your CV and online application, please arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent directly to PhysicsLOR@bnl.gov Why Work at BNL?
