Duke University Libraries seeks applications to fill the position of Project Archivist for an innovative 3-year grant funded collaborative project focused on building capacity for archiving the modern social justice movement activities of the past ten years. This position will work closely with the project manager of the Our Story. Our Terms: Documenting Movement Building from the Inside Out project to supervise a group of early career archivists and cultural memory workers who will collaborate with present day activist organizations. The archivist collective will work to survey, organize, and develop organizational archiving practices with their partners. The project archivist will also lead the development of a digital collection featuring activist selected materials that document the modern activist movement of social and political activism. This is a 3-year term position. Priority given to applicants received prior to June 20, 2021.

Responsibilities

Administrative (50%)

·       Recruit a cohort of archivists interested in aiding activist organizations with archiving their records

·       Coordinate training sessions with cohort members on topics that address organizational archiving needs and best practices for activist collections

·       Convene regular remote meetings with archivist cohort over the course of two years

·       Work with activist organizations to understand and troubleshoot issues related to capacity, intellectual property, copyright, etc. 

Content Creation (25%)

·       Lead the development of a digital collection of selected materials from these archives and the project’s activist conversations for public sharing

·       Convene archivist collective members and partnering organizations to chronicle their work together over the course of the project

Communication and Relationship Building (25%)

·       Maintain communication with project partners on status of project milestones

·       Work closely with the Our Story project manager to adhere to project deadlines and deliverables 

Other duties as assigned 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises 4-7 members of the project’s archivist collective
  • Leads recruitment of the project’s archivist collective

Qualifications

Education:

Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in history, Africana Studies, humanities, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the conceptual, analytical, and interpersonal skills required to manage and lead a critical library program.

Experience:

Required:  3 years and record of successful performance of work and show promise of an extended range of professional activity in the future.    

Preferred:  Experience working in a university setting; curatorial and/or processing experience with activist materials; prior experience with intellectual property law; experience publishing digital content online; demonstrated knowledge of the history of social justice movements in the United States.

Working Conditions

  • Project archivist is eligible to work remotely if they currently reside in the following states: California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, DC
  • Regular communication with the Franklin Research Center director and project partners expected.
  • Virtual attendance at occasional events outside of normal work hours

Salary and Benefits

Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; however, the anticipated range is $54,000-$60,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
