Nutrient Management and Environmental Sustainability Specialist
Senior Extension Associate
Department of Animal Science
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)
Cornell University Ithaca, New York

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented identities to apply.

CALS is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.

The Department of Animal Science’s mission is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society. Our department is devoted to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension, and outreach. The PRO-DAIRY Nutrient Management Program offers nutrient management educational programs with an emphasis on optimizing crop yields, reducing fertilizer costs, accounting for manure nutrients, identifying related environmental benefits and protecting water quality.

What You Will Do

As the Nutrient Management and Environmental Sustainability Specialist, you will develop an integrated nutrient management and environmental sustainability program in collaboration with the Cornell Nutrient Management Spear Program and partners. You will provide producers and industry with information that can be used to support sound production practices that also reduce offsite environmental impact, including identification of emerging best-management practices, use of nutrient mass balance tools, etc. Other responsibilities include:
• Developing and maintaining relationships to foster integrated approaches to environmental improvement across and with key partner agencies.

• Providing leadership for planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs that address producer and industry needs and opportunities.

• Planning and implementing educational programs utilizing various methods, including direct teaching through group experiences, mass media, newsletters, electronic technology, use of the internet, and distance learning.

• Analyzing and evaluating major program efforts and make recommendations for enhancing future programming.

• Preparing quarterly reports and yearly impact statements on program progress and accomplishments.

• Collaborating, initiating, or conducting field demonstrations and applied research projects appropriate to the needs of dairy-related nutrient management systems.

• Individually and collaboratively explore and pursue new and additional funding sources to enhance and extend program opportunities.

This position is full-time and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a five-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.

What We Need

We are looking for a dynamic individual that excels at building relationships with multiple stakeholders to identify and address industry needs. We need someone who appreciates the dairy industry in New York State and can identify and answer pressing, current nutrient and environmental management-related questions. Additionally, we need someone who has:
• Master’s Degree in Agriculture from an accredited institution with a major in agronomy, soil science, environmental science, or closely associated fields.

• 8+ years of relevant work experience in Agribusiness, Crop Production, Cooperative Extension, or closely related fields.

• Experience in conducting, interpreting, evaluating, and communicating the results of applied research.

• Highly motivated to generate, translate, and communicate academic knowledge and convert it into practical, useful information for dairy producers and industry.

• Strong desire and ability to function in a team setting.

• Knowledge of the philosophy, objectives, and operation of an informal education system such as Cornell Cooperative Extension.

• Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with diverse audiences in group and one-on-one settings, working effectively with advisory boards and committees, community and funding partners.

• Proven organizational and time-management skills.

• Ability to define, conduct, and interpret applied research and demonstration projects.

• Successful experience obtaining new funding, including grants and industry support.

• Strong leadership and teamwork skills.

• Effective written and verbal communication skills.

• Fundamental competence utilizing current technology as a management and program delivery tool (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet).

• Appreciation of Agriculture as a business and as a lifestyle.

• Creativity, energy, motivation, and positive enthusiasm.

• Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license.

• Ability to work evenings and weekends as essential job functions require.
If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:
• Ph.D. or J.D. preferred.
• Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) certification.

If a Ph.D. or J.D. is held, then 6+ years of relevant work experience is required.
