EIS serves Duke’s educational mission by supporting multilingual graduate and professional students in becoming confident, independent users of academic and professional English. The program provides effective, individualized English-language instruction, advising, and assessment centered on students’ dynamic field-specific communication needs.
Appointment (beginning August 2021):
Initial appointments are for one year and are renewable annually based on positive performance
reviews. Instructors who have worked for at least four consecutive years with positive
reviews will qualify for three-year contracts from that point forward.
Responsibilities:
• Teach five courses per academic year on a rotational basis
• Assist with pre-semester placement testing and exam rating
• Participate in or manage projects as assigned by the assistant dean/director (e.g., committee work, departmental presentations, workshops, curriculum planning, test development, consultation with faculty and departments on issues of student performance and departmental expectations)
• Complete and submit all student assessments and reports, including final grades, by established deadlines
• Collaborate closely with other EIS instructors
• Share course-related materials
• Hold office hours in the EIS office space
• Attend all faculty meetings
• Stay abreast of developments in the field
• Perform other duties as assigned by the assistant dean/director
Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in TESOL or applied linguistics
• Three years of teaching experience in a university-based ESL program (previous work with multilingual graduate and professional students highly desired)
• Demonstrated communication skills (written and verbal)
• Excellent computer skills
• Proven ability to work independently
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work cooperatively and collegially in a team-oriented office
