Duke University Press is seeking a Project Editor (Asst. Managing Editor) to manage 20 to 25 trade and scholarly books per year. The Project Editor is responsible for ensuring editorial quality and maintaining production timelines; has solid editorial experience and excellent project management skills; demonstrates the ability to make decisions and to solve problems independently; and demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning.

I. Responsibility for Timely Project Management of Editorial, Proofreading, and Indexing on assigned list of books, from manuscript transmittal to check of final files for printing • Maintain schedules throughout production; update managing editor with weekly schedule maintenance information in Title Management on all titles • Keep up-to-date reports; responsible for informing the managing editor about scheduling issues • Coordinate final book dates with EDP director and managing editor, as well as with book designers working on individual titles

II. Responsibility for Overall Quality of Editing, Proofreading, and Production of individual list of books • Evaluate manuscripts for completeness at assignment; prepare analysis of copyediting needs in collaboration with authors • Hire and supervise copyeditors, proofreaders, indexers as needed; send copyedited mss to authors for review; review author changes to copyedited ms; prepare manuscript for designer to complete interior text design; send manuscript into typesetting; send page proofs to authors and proofreaders; review author changes in proofs; edit indexes; check all subsequent passes of proofs to ensure accuracy; check final PDF files for printing • Provide timely and thorough feedback to freelancers about their performance to ensure quality • Supply well-edited and well-prepared manuscripts for composition; oversee work done by compositors to ensure quality of pages and final files

III. Monitor Costs for Books Produced, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget • Determine copyediting and proofreading budget, and schedules for freelance services • Approve invoices; keep relevant Press staff informed of budget or author issues that could affect costs

IV. Act as Liaison Between Authors and Duke University Press throughout the production process • Establish contact with author at project assignment; communicate with author about copyediting issues; troubleshoot with author as necessary throughout copyediting, page proof, and index stages • Communicate schedules to authors and keep authors informed about upcoming stages as well as potential delays • Employ effective strategies for working with authors and other professionals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences; demonstrate interest in equity and inclusion • Sensitivity to concerns relating to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and ability/disability

V. Edit and Proofread Cover Copy

Preferred Skills and Experience: • Prefer broad knowledge of editorial styles and practices; knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style author/date and numbered note reference styles; prefer three years of copyediting experience • Technical requirements include word processing (electronic editing), Adobe Acrobat, database experience • Excellent communication, time management, decision-making, project management, and diplomatic skills Required Experience: Work generally requires one year of editorial experience in a publishing or related setting to acquire skills necessary to assist in managing and coordinating a variety of tasks such as copyediting, evaluating manuscripts for accuracy, clarity, content, and completeness, monitoring production schedules, and proofreading. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Educational Requirements: Work requires communication skills, plus analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
