Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The Physics Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) announces a search for theoretical and experimental postdoctoral positions in our new Quantum Information Science and Microelectronics programs. We pursue the development of novel sensing concepts and technology for future experiments searching for new fundamental physics like dark matter and exotic gravitational phenomena.

The development involves both theoretical and experimental multidisciplinary work, including collaborations with scientists in other LBNL divisions and other institutions. Our current and planned work includes sensing of quasiparticles with sub-eV threshold and zero dark counts in crystals, liquid He, and new nano or quantum materials; single photon sensitive imagers with timing and spectral information; opto-mechanical sensing beyond the standard quantum limit; and concepts at the interface of sensing and qubit technology. We also engage in theoretical work to understand the quantum information properties of new physics signals and ways to leverage this for new experiments.

Hires under this posting would be appointed for 2 years, with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 additional years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Appointments may start during the 2021 calendar year.

Berkeley Lab is committed to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability (IDEA - https://diversity.lbl.gov/) and strives to hire individuals who share these same values and commitments.  We encourage applications from women, minorities, veterans, and other underrepresented groups presently considering scientific research careers.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on December 1, 2021.

Position Duties:

  • Work on developing novel sensing technology with new capabilities, such as going beyond the “standard quantum limit” (SQL), performing quantum coherent read-out of multiple devices, or exploiting coherent processes in new materials.

  • Conduct original research independently and in collaboration.

  • Interact with investigators at LBNL and other institutes working on similar or related scientific problems.

  • Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.

  • Prepare research papers for publication.

  • Present research findings at seminars and conferences.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in physics or related field.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, and to contribute to a large software project.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a research group.

  • Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in any of the following areas: quantum sensing, nano-materials or quantum materials, theory work oriented to experimental searches for new physics, knowledge of particle physics.

How To Apply:

The following requested application materials listed below must be submitted through Academic Jobs Online:

  1. Curriculum vitae.

  2. A list of up to ten relevant publications, including contributions for multi-author publications.

  3. A statement describing future research interests (3-page limit excluding figures and references).

  4. Arrange to have at least 3 letters of reference submitted (at least one reference from outside LBNL/UC Berkeley).

Notes:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

  • Salary for postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree and will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
