Context and summary:

The INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre (EMT) is looking to fill a new tenure-track Quantum Photonics Research Chair professorship funded by Québec’s Ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation. The Chair is dedicated to developing next-generation quantum communications technologies. Desired fields of expertise include (i) generation of single pairs of entangled photons that fall into the telecommunications band, (ii) development of new metrologies for controlling photon pairs using quantum operations, (iii) quantum repeaters to preserve the transmission of entanglement in fibers against losses and detection, (iv) development of innovative systems using photonics to process information and advanced calculations using, for example, optical artificial intelligence or nanophotonics, (v) design and demonstration of quantum-secured optical communications such as quantum cryptography and networking for a more secure transmission of personal/government/industrial data as well as for cybersecurity, and (vi) quantum algorithms and error correction for advanced computing performances. The applications of interest of this Quantum Photonics Chair include communications over fiber optics, as well as satellite and next-generation (6G and beyond) wireless communications. One of the main INRS targets is indeed to boost telecommunications both in fibers and wireless by leveraging the research field of quantum optics, which is making huge steps towards nonclassical technology advancement, the applications of which are thus crucial for reaching such a target.

The EMT Research Centre is recognized across Canada and the world for the expertise of its research professors, including in the fields of optics and photonics, ultrafast science, fiber optic and wireless communications, signal processing, and artificial intelligence. The Centre has multiple state-of-the-art labs supporting its research, such as the Ultrahigh Speed Light Manipulation Laboratory (LULMAN), the Networks and Cyber Physical Systems Lab (NECPHY-Lab), the Wireless Laboratory, and the Radio Frequency Laboratory (LRF). It is also home to important resources such as the Advanced Laser Light Source (ALLS) facility, the Micro and Nanofabrication Laboratory (LMN), and a special facility for time-resolved electron microscopy. The successful candidate will join roughly 40 professors conducting highly competitive research and training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in fields such as ultrafast and integrated photonics, advanced materials, sustainable energy, environmental solutions, telecommunications systems, and nanobiotechnology.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Develop their own independent, competitive, innovative research program; • Secure funding for their research program through external grants from public and private organizations as well as industry partnerships as required ; • Work with existing research teams and develop and maintain partnerships with groups outside the EMT Research Centre ; • Participate in teaching and training activities, particularly as part of the Centre’s graduate programs, and in the supervision of postdoctoral fellows and research staff.

Requirements:

• PhD in a relevant discipline (physics, quantum physics, engineering, etc.); • Strong demonstrated R&D expertise permitting the development of a robust, innovative research program OR, for young researchers, strong R&D and leadership potential in the field; • Expertise that complements current expertise at EMT; • Experience in and/or aptitude for teaching and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; • Ability to work within multidisciplinary research teams and networks; • Ability to work with industry partners; • Entrepreneurial qualities (or demonstrated potential thereof) and ability to secure research funding from granting agencies.

Working language:

The working language is French. Fluency in English is required. Applicants who are not fully fluent in French are strongly encouraged to apply. If they are chosen for the position, the necessary resources will be put at their disposal to learn French.
