Department Overview

One of the oldest computing programs in the country, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at The Ohio State University (OSU) is a national leader in impactful computing research and education. We create, teach, and actualize the principles that connect computing and society while advancing the forefront of foundational computer science into various interdisciplinary realms. With current strength of 45 tenure-track faculty, the department is poised for a large-scale expansion over the next few years, starting with the search for 20 tenure-track positions this academic year. The department continues to raise its national and international research profile, as exemplified by the recent NSF awards for two AI Institutes and a Harnessing the Data Revolution Institute, netting a total of $55M in research funding. The department will continue to invest in creative and team science activities leading to ever increasing strengths in both foundational and applied AI while advancing traditional topics of computer science. The department is also developing innovative academic programs centered on AI and data analytics with various campus partners in topics such as cybersecurity, data analytics, digital health, and multimedia. CSE faculty closely collaborate with various centers on campus including the Translational Data Analytics Institute (TDAI), the Initiative for Food and Agricultural Transformation (InFACT), and the Ohio Supercomputer Center. CSE is vested in creating new and strengthening existing Diversity and Inclusion programs to provide an inclusive environment that will welcome all scholars. The department, through its growth, research prowess, academic offerings, and a welcoming culture, is poised to be the hub of computing scholarship and education on OSU’s campus.

College Overview

The College of Engineering offers 14 undergraduate and 13 graduate programs in 12 departments or centers, as well as three undergraduate and four graduate degrees in the Knowlton School of Architecture, to approximately 10,000 students. The college has recently expanded its degree offerings with a BS in Engineering Technology available on the regional campuses of the university. The college is one of the largest and impactful institutions in the field with 405 engineering and architecture faculty members. Included in this total are 328 tenure track faculty, 54 clinical track faculty, and 23 research track faculty. The college has 14 National Academy of Engineering members and numerous members of societies and reward recipients. In fiscal year 2020, the college had nearly $138.5 million in externally sponsored research expenditures. Industry R&D expenditures for the College of Engineering in fiscal year 2020 totaled nearly $44 million.

Positions Overview

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (https://cse.osu.edu/) at The Ohio State University invites applications for 20 tenure-track faculty appointments at all seniority levels and in all CSE research areas, if qualifications contribute to the overall diversity of the department’s research, teaching, and learning environments. All research areas will be considered, with emphasis on theory and algorithms, artificial intelligence and machine learning, human-centric computing, robotics, high-performance computing and systems, networking and next generation communications, graphics and visualization, cybersecurity and privacy, the intersection of CSE and health/life sciences, computing for social good (including race, inclusion, and social equity), data science and analytics, computational science, quantum computing, and computing education in the 21st century. Tenure-track faculty will perform research, teaching, advising, and service, and will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in computing. Candidates for appointment at senior ranks should demonstrate a record of achievement in these areas as well as plans for further growth. Candidates for appointment at the assistant professor rank should demonstrate the potential for achievement in these areas, including plans for further growth.

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants should hold or be completing a Ph.D. in computer science and engineering or a closely related field
  • Applicants should have a commitment to or a demonstrated record of excellence in computing research, teaching and student advising, external and internal service, and contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with or commitment to interdisciplinary research and education
  • A record of engagement with industrial or government partners
