Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The Weak Interactions Team in the Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is inviting applications for a postdoctoral appointment to work on double beta decay searches within the LEGEND program and the in-house testing of novel dark matter detectors. The postdoc will contribute to the team's efforts on the LEGEND-200 double-beta decay experiment and the on-going R&D for the ton-scale effort. This includes installation and data analysis for the LEGEND experiment at Gran Sasso, Italy. In addition, we are seeking a candidate with a strong interest in detector development. In a joint effort with Materials Science and Theory at LANL, as well as other partners in the US, new narrow bandgap semiconductors with quantum sensing applications are being developed and tested. These materials can respond to sub-eV energy deposits through charge excitations, and the postdoc will work on the detector readout chain, data acquisition, and analysis for a dark matter search.

Preference will be given to candidates who could start in the coming Fall or Winter (i.e., Oct/2021-Mar/2022).

Required qualifications:
- Experimental background in one or more of the following areas: nuclear physics, particle physics, detector readouts and design, low background counting, or data acquisition
- Ability for significant travel, within pandemic constraints, to experimental sites
- Strong communication and language skills as evidenced by publications, presentations, and application's research statement
- Education/Experience: A Ph.D. completed within the past 5 years (2016 or later) in experimental nuclear or particle physics, astrophysics, or related field

For eligibility and salary information, please see LANL Postdoc Eligibility and LANL Postdoctoral Salary Guidelines.

Desired qualifications:
- Experience at underground facilities
- Detector readout and front-end development
- Strong record of publications
- Familiarity with germanium detectors
- Experience with other weak interactions measurements

Interested applicants should submit their application (CV, research statement addressing the required and desired skills in detail, and three letters of recommendation) to this site. Applications received by October 1st, 2021 will receive full consideration, and exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be nominated for a Distinguished or Director’s Fellowship. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

LANL is an equal opportunity employer. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.
