The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) in the College of Engineering of the University of California, Davis invites candidates for an Assistant Professor of Teaching in Biomedical Engineering position.

The Assistant Professor of Teaching series emphasizes excellence in teaching and student-centered efforts, and complements the research-focused Professor series at the University of California. Appointment conveys membership in the Academic Senate and, contingent upon promotion, security of employment that parallels tenure. Professors of Teaching are expected to be outstanding teachers, engage in professional and/or scholarly achievement and activities (i.e. educational scholarship and curricular innovation), and provide service to the department, University, and public.

Applicants must be able to teach core undergraduate courses, and be willing to help evolve an innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum in the field of biomedical engineering. Attractive candidates will have a clear interest in teaching, teaching experience, sound ideas for improving student learning and engagement, and ideas for enhancing the biomedical engineering curricula.

In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education. Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD or equivalent degree in biomedical engineering or related quantitative field is required and must have been awarded by the date of hire.

- Commitment to a career in teaching biomedical engineering as demonstrated by evidence of, or potential for, excellence in some or all of the following: 
  • Teaching of biomedical engineering undergraduate courses 
  • Improving biomedical engineering curricula
  • Improving student engagement and learning
  • Innovating in instruction to enhance student learning
  • Contributing to initiatives related to entrepreneurship, engineering design and medical device development 
  • Teaching hands-on courses in the areas of computation, circuits, and bioinstrumentation 
  • Facilitating student engagement with engineering industry
  • Supporting program and course level continuous improvement activities related to ABET accreditation
- Evidence of, or potential for, engagement with professional networks (e.g., in teaching pedagogy) and professional activities (e.g., educational scholarship)
- Evidence of, or potential for, commitment to public service, including community engagement
- Evidence of commitment to or strong potential for commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion for historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities, and its integration with a career in education.

The Department
The Department of Biomedical Engineering is committed to building an excellent, diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body. The department consists of 35 faculty members, and serves over 450 undergraduate students in an ABET accredited program. The Department has existing strengths in the areas of tissue engineering/regenerative medicine, cellular and molecular engineering, biomechanics, biomedical imaging. micro/nano systems, therapeutics, and computational/ systems biology. BME faculty benefit from close collaborations with the School of Medicine, Division of Biological Sciences, and School of Veterinary Medicine. The Department is home to state-of-the-art resources and facilities that serve both our academic and research programs, including the Center for Molecular and Genomic Imaging and the TEAM (Translating Engineering Advances to Medicine) Design, Prototyping, and Fabrication Laboratories. The Department is also highly engaged in the campus Aggie Square innovation initiative, located at the UC Davis Sacramento campus, including the development of new undergraduate and graduate focused education programs.
