College Overview:  The College of Engineering offers 14 undergraduate and 13 graduate programs in 12 departments or centers, as well as, three undergraduate and four graduate degrees in the Knowlton School of Architecture, to approximately 10,000 students. The college has recently expanded its degree offerings with a BS in Engineering Technology available on the regional campuses of the university. The college is one of the largest in the field with 405 faculty. The college has 14 National Academy of Engineering members and numerous members of societies and award recipients. In fiscal year 2020, the college had nearly $138.5 million in externally sponsored research expenditures. Industry R&D expenditures for the College of Engineering in fiscal year 2020 totaled nearly $44 million.

Department Overview:  The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is one of the largest departments in the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. We are home to nearly 80 faculty and over 35 dedicated staff members. Approximately 1900 undergraduates are pursuing a degree in either Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering through rigorous programs that feature hands-on, project-based learning. Nearly 300 graduate students are seeking a degree in either Mechanical, Aerospace, or Nuclear Engineering. Our innovative and creative faculty adhere to the philosophy that true innovation depends upon the cooperation of academia, industry, and government working together to advance the goals of science and technology. Our students and faculty regularly collaborate with colleagues in other departments in the College of Engineering and with multiple other colleges across campus. Strong research relationships exist with the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA Glenn Research Center, GE Aviation, Honda of America, and numerous other industrial partners. Department faculty have over $26 million in sponsored research expenditures in areas such as advanced transportation systems (automotive and aerospace), energy and environmental quality, materials and manufacturing, micro- and nanotechnology, nuclear energy, and bioengineering while providing leadership for the Center for Automotive Research, The NSF IUCRC Smart Vehicle Concepts Center, the Aerospace Research Center, the Simulation Innovation and Modeling Center, and the Nuclear Reactor Laboratory.

This position is also highly synergistic with the mission of the Department of Engineering Education (EED) at OSU. EED was created in November 2015 and the Ph.D. program was approved in Spring 2018. EED’s mission includes advancing the engineering profession and enabling student success by: (1) contributing to developing world-class scholarship in engineering education; (2) modeling and advocating scholarly, evidence-based teaching within the College of Engineering; and (3) developing and delivering state-of-the-art, innovative, multidisciplinary courses and programs in first-year engineering, engineering technical communication, multidisciplinary capstone design, and graduate education in engineering education. Looking towards the future, EED is positioned to grow and establish stronger connections across the College of Engineering and the field.

Position Overview: The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at The Ohio State University (OSU) seeks outstanding applicants for a full-time tenure-track faculty position with a focus on candidates working at the intersection of Engineering and Social Justice. Applications will be accepted at all ranks. Underrepresented minorities and women are especially encouraged to apply. MAE at OSU seeks to make positive contributions to a just and equitable society at the local, national, and international levels through education and research in areas like design, mobility, energy, biomedical technologies, education, and manufacturing. Example areas of research interest could include but are not limited to: socially responsible and equitable design of products and systems; engineering design for under-served or under-resourced communities; humanitarian engineering; societal and environmental impacts of emerging research in mobility, energy, automation, robotics; and understanding and addressing racial, gender, and ethnic disparities in health and education outcomes. Research and education efforts aimed to improve diversity & inclusion in mechanical and aerospace engineering education are also of interest. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or appropriate discipline and a commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in all areas of education and research. Depending on the individual interests of the candidate, there is a possibility of a joint appointment with the Department of Engineering Education.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree with a major in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Education, or a closely related field

  • Potential for, or the evidence of, the ability to secure federal and/or industrial support for innovative research.
