Position Description

The Computational Quantum Science Lab at EPFL seeks highly motivated Postdoctoral researchers in the field of computational and theoretical methods for interacting quantum systems.

We are looking for candidates in two main areas

The first area of research concerns classical simulation and modelling of quantum systems with advanced techniques. Ideal candidates in this area should have significant experience with modern computational techniques such as for example (Quantum Monte Carlo, Neural-Network Quantum States, Tensor Networks, etc). Alternatively, candidates with a more prominent analytical attitude (Condensed Matter theory, Statistical Physics, Machine Learning theory, etc) are also encouraged to apply, provided they have a record of successful collaborations with computational scientists.

The second area of research concerns the development of quantum algorithms, typically on near-term quantum hardware. In this area our main interests are in the context of Variational Quantum Algorithms and related topics. Ideal candidates should have experience with implementing and developing novel quantum algorithms, for example through basic computational tools such as Qiskit or similar. More analytically-oriented minds (in Quantum Information Theory, Learning theory etc) are also welcome to apply, provided they also have a taste for applications to problems in many-body Physics or related.

  • a PhD in Physics is preferred, however depending on the profile we will also consider applicants with a PhD in related areas such as Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science
  • past record and potential for future contributions in research
  • potential for engagement with the scientific activities at EPFL
  • alignment with our research goals
  • contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • teaching experience is not required but it is positively evaluated in the application
We offer:
  • excellent research conditions and a highly competitive salary
  • a multi-cultural and stimulating scientific environment
  • this is a one year contract renewable for a maximum of 4 years according to EPFL rules
