Attending Veterinarian and Director

Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE)

Cornell University

Ithaca, NY

Cornell University seeks a Director of the Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE), who also serves as the Attending Veterinarian for the University. Cornell’s animal care and use program supports a vast array of research and teaching including biomedical, behavioral, environmental, field, and agricultural programs. The program is among the largest in the nation with many and varied facilities and great diversity of animal species. Cornell’s program has been fully AAALAC accredited since 1977, and most recently re-accredited in 2021. Continued AAALAC accreditation is an institutional expectation and a position the university deems essential in demonstrating its commitment to providing a consistently high standard of care for all animals and for providing exceptional support of the institution’s research and teaching missions.

CARE provides clinical veterinary services, research consultation, procedural and other support services, education and training, animal husbandry, and facilities management and expertise. CARE is responsible for Cornell’s Laboratory Animal Medicine Residency program that resides in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Reporting to the Vice President for Research and Innovation, the CARE Director oversees all of the above, amounting to 23 facilities spread across 85 buildings and 688 acres. CARE oversees over 30 distinct species, amounting to 500,000 animals. In addition to the Director, CARE consists of over 80 staff including an administrative and financial team, veterinarians, residents, facility supervisors, and husbandry staff. The CARE budget (from central allocation and per diem charges) amounts to over $5.5 million.

The ideal candidate will hold a doctoral (D.V.M. / V.M.D.) or equivalent degree from an AVMA Council on Education accredited veterinary college or school, together with board certification from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or international equivalent. An additional advanced degree (MS, PhD, MBA) is desired but not essential. They must have extensive (10+ years post-residency) experience in laboratory animal medicine in an academic or industry setting, including experience conducting animal research, performing protocol reviews, involvement in IACUC, providing veterinary oversight to a diverse species set and a wide variety of animal research models, and advising research teams. Experience working at a large land grant institution with a diverse, decentralized campus that includes an Agricultural and/or a Veterinary school is desired, but not critical. The applicant must have experience in leadership and managerial roles, including  detailed involvement in budgetary oversight and management. The successful applicant must have demonstrated working knowledge of NIH/OLAW, USDA, AAALAC, and regulations and standards regarding animal research. They should have experience interacting with the USDA veterinary staff during inspections, as well as preparation and leadership of AAALAC accreditation processes. An active research program is a bonus but not necessary. Finally, the applicant must show experience with managing a diverse group of people, as well as maintaining a positive, collaborative, collegial, and efficient work environment.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications early in 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. To ensure full consideration, please submit a letter of interest and a curriculm vitae by January 15th, 2022. For further information about this position, please email Paula Cohen, Associate Vice Provost for Life Sciences.
