Associate In Research in the Dunn lab at Duke University

We seek a full-time associate in research to work at Duke University, Pratt School of Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering on an exciting new project at the interface of machine learning and biology. The associate will apply new tools for computer vision to analyze new high-dimensional datasets of real biological systems.

Specific Work Performed

•Use custom lab deep learning software (dannce -- www.github.com/spoonsso/dannce) to analyze existing video datasets. This will include running dannce over videos via slurm on the Duke high performance compute cluster, using existing scripts and protocols.

•Optimize dannce performance by running hyperparameter and network architecture searches.

•While working with the codebase, improve the dannce pipeline via refactoring and integration of pipeline subcomponents. Contribute to dannce documentation and public releases on GitHub.

•Use existing lab scripts to analyze dannce pose tracking data, with the end goal to identify animal action type clusters and assess how these clusters change across experimental conditions.

•Learn to run camera calibrations and assist with setting up video acquisition for biological experiments.

Other Work Performed and Expectations

•Document progress consistently and add progress reports to the lab archive

•Attend weekly lab meetings

•Communicate with staff and students in the lab, and assist in training new lab members to use established protocols

No prior job experience is required, but applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. The applicant would ideally have experience with Python programming and deep learning APIs, but there are also opportunities to contribute if the applicant can learn to run existing scripts and protocols for data analysis. There are no formal requirements for the type of degree.

The position will provide opportunities to co-author publications and build a productive portfolio for applying to graduate programs or industry jobs in any field valuing experience with machine learning or biological data analysis.
