Acquisitions/Serials Librarian The Ford Library

Overview

The Acquisitions/Serials Librarian manages all aspects of the acquisition of library materials for the Ford Library, including a diverse range of materials (monographs, journals, media, audio, microforms) in all formats, including print and online, to support faculty research, classroom instruction and career development at the Fuqua School of Business and to support Ford Library collections and operations.

The Acquisitions/Serials Librarian also manages all aspects of serial publications in all formats, print and online, including gathering and analyzing e-journal usage metrics for decision making. The Acquisitions/Serials Librarian communicates and negotiates with vendors, other librarians at Duke and the TRLN consortium, with library users and staff. In addition, the Acquisitions/Serials Librarian manages departmental procurement card spending for travel and other incidentals for the Ford Library. The Acquisitions/Serials Librarian reports to the Resource Access Librarian.

Specific Responsibilities Manage all aspects of Ford Library monograph, serial and media acquisitions (40%) Examples: • Manages and ensures efficient and effective workflows for the acquisition of a diverse range of materials • Evaluates and selects vendors for materials as needed • Identifies materials for purchase • Establishes and maintains relationships with vendors in order to ensure prompt resolution of problems • Assigns vendor and fund codes for purchase and payment from acquisitions funds • Approves invoices for payment • Communicates with subject librarians to purchase and/or replace materials • Coordinates gifts-in-kind with Access Services Librarian • Maintains appropriate acquisitions records • Creates and maintains departmental documentation of policies, procedures, and workflows related to acquisitions • Supervises at least 1 student assistant as needed to ensure correct processing of acquired materials

Manage all aspects of Ford Library serials, including print and electronic (40%) Examples: • Builds and maintains relationships with vendors to acquire, establish and ensure consistent access to library holdings across multiple platforms • Participates in data gathering and analysis of pricing, usage, and other metrics to support renewal decisions • Creates, activates and maintains serials records • Receives, claims and maintains print serials collection and records • Serves as Ford Library administrator for Serials Solutions • Manages the serials renewal process • Resolves e-journal access problems • Coordinates with peers in other Duke libraries to ensure accurate serial records in a shared knowledge base • Represent Ford Library on Duke libraries’ work groups or TRLN committees

Financial management (20%) Examples: • Manages and documents travel expenses for department within budgetary requirements • Process reimbursements and procurement card reconciliations for Ford Library • Communicates with Fuqua Accounting for accuracy, timeliness and problem resolution

Education and Experience ALA accredited MLS is required with a minimum of 3 years of library experience. Experience with library acquisitions and serials is required. Experience in managing library acquisitions and serials workflows is preferred. Experience with vendor relationship management is preferred. The ability to adapt to new technologies is required. Knowledge of one or more integrated library systems as well as Microsoft Excel and Access is required. Also required is the ability to handle multiple priorities in an independent manner. Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are also required.

Technical Skills Familiarity with the continuing resources lifecycle, knowledge and experience with searching, editing, report creation, and batch operations in an integrated library system, or other web interface tools to bibliographic databases; knowledge of Connexion (OCLC), Serials Solutions, and Aleph (ExLibris) or a comparable integrated library system; proficient knowledge of MS Excel and familiarity with using MS Access; demonstrated ability to search and interpret information retrieved from the Internet.

Position is on-site at the Ford Library, Fuqua School of Business in Durham, NC.
