The College of Engineering at The Ohio State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The Department’s research and education emphasis is broad, ranging from sustainable energy, nanotechnology, networking and nuclear engineering, along with their applications in myriad domains, including healthcare, manufacturing, and transportation.

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is one of the largest departments in the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. The Department is home to nearly 80 faculty and over 35 dedicated staff members. Approximately 1900 undergraduates are pursuing a degree in either Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (and a minor in Nuclear Engineering) through rigorous programs that feature hands-on, project-based learning. Nearly 300 graduate students are enrolled in a degree program in either Mechanical, Aerospace, or Nuclear Engineering. Our innovative and creative faculty adhere to the philosophy that true advancement depends upon the cooperation of academia, industry, and government working together to advance the goals of science and technology. Our students and faculty regularly collaborate with colleagues in other departments in the College of Engineering and with multiple other colleges across campus. Strong research relationships exist with the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA Glenn Research Center, several National Laboratories, GE Aviation, Honda of America, and numerous other industrial partners. Department faculty have over $26 million in sponsored research expenditures annually in areas such as advanced transportation systems (automotive and aerospace), energy and environmental sustainability, materials and manufacturing, micro- and nanotechnology, nuclear sciences and engineering, and bioengineering while providing leadership for the Center for Automotive Research, The NSF IUCRC Smart Vehicle Concepts Center, the Aerospace Research Center, the Simulation Innovation and Modeling Center, the Center for Cancer Engineering and the Nuclear Reactor Laboratory.

The College of Engineering has about 10,000 students and offers 14 undergraduate and 13 graduate degrees in 12 engineering departments, as well as three undergraduate and four graduate degrees in the Knowlton School of Architecture. The College has recently expanded its degree offerings with a BS in Engineering Technology available on the university’s regional campuses. The College is one of the largest and most impactful institutions in the field with 405 engineering and architecture faculty members. The College has 14 National Academy of Engineering members and numerous fellows of societies and award recipients. In fiscal year 2020, the College had more than $138 million in externally sponsored research expenditures. Industry R&D expenditures for the College of Engineering in fiscal year 2020 totaled over $43 million.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Chair Overview

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Chair leads a faculty that currently includes 52 tenured track faculty, 6 research track faculty, 13 clinical track faculty, 13 research scientists, 3 lecturers and oversees 30 research centers and laboratories. The Chair, who reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering, is responsible for all administrative, budgetary, and personnel decisions within the Department, and will be responsible for leadership, management, and strategic vision for the next phase of the Department’s growth.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in engineering or a closely related field and the professional qualifications and credentials necessary to be appointed at the rank of full professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE).
  • Ability to develop, articulate and execute a strong strategic vision for the MAE department and to lead cultural changes in support of this strategic vision.
  • Experience in leading people and managing academic programs and budgets.
  • A track-record of, and demonstrated strong commitment to, cultivating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment that includes faculty and staff development, hiring and retention, and student recruitment.
  • A commitment to academic excellence and interdisciplinary education at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • A commitment to collaborative research and a track record of competitive research funding from a variety of sources.
  • A track record of service to and leadership of the profession within a university or research organization.
  • A collaborative leadership style that builds and grows relationships within and between the Department, College, University, and external stakeholders (alumni, parents, business, government, and local community).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong record of ethical behavior, integrity, and transparency.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability and/or previous experience working collaboratively with college and university administrators and leaders to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
  • A history of engaging in entrepreneurial activities, industrial partnerships, and external fundraising.
