The Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE) at Duke University seeks a Professor of the Practice or Executive in Residence in the area of Natural Resources Finance. The growth of investment in forestland, water rights, mitigation/conservation banks, sustainable fisheries, and other natural resources since the 1980s has created demand for professionals who combine skills related to natural resource management with skills in financial analysis and investment management. It has also increased the value of natural resources professionals who are conversant in financial concepts, and the value of finance professionals who have a basic understanding of natural resources and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concepts. This position seeks to build on Duke’s and NSOE’s strengths in the education and practice of natural resource finance as well as ESG-investment management. The chief responsibilities of this position include: 1) establishing and administering an educational program in natural resources finance through course instruction and mentoring within NSOE’s Master of Environmental Management (MEM) and Master of Forestry (MF) programs; 2) teaching up to 3 courses for MEM and MF students, including a core financial management course and more advanced courses in natural resources finance/investing; 3) advising Master’s projects; 4) developing private- and/or public-sector partnerships, along with alumni relationships to support student internships and career opportunities; 5) serving as a liaison to other programs within the Nicholas School, other units at Duke (in particular Fuqua School of Business, Duke Financial Economics Center, and the newly merged Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and Duke University Energy Initiative); 6) representing Duke and NSOE more broadly to relevant external organizations and communities.

Applicants will be considered for a position as either a Professor of Practice or an Executive-in-Residence. A Professor of Practice is a regular-rank, non-tenure track position; applicants for that position should have a PhD or DBA in a relevant field, or a JD with relevant professional experience. Regardless of educational background, experience in the private sector is highly desirable. An Executive-in-Residence is a non-tenure track, non-regular rank faculty position; applicants for that position should have relevant education (e.g., MF, MBA) as well as considerable professional experience directly applicable to natural resource finance, particularly in the private sector. Applicants must be available to begin teaching in the 2022 fall semester, with a flexible start date to allow preparation of courses. Further inquiries may be directed to the search committee chair, Dr. Martin Doyle (martin.doyle@duke.edu). The search committee will begin reviewing applications January 15, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled.

To apply, please submit: 1) a short cover letter describing interest in and qualifications for the position; 2) an up-to-date curriculum vitae or resume; 3) a statement of experience and interests in the practice of natural resources finance; 4) a statement of mentoring or teaching experience and philosophy, including experience with, and commitment to, mentoring diverse groups of coworkers or teaching and advising a diverse student body; 5) names and contact information for three references.
