Position Description:    

The Physics of Condensed Matter and Complex Systems group at Los Alamos National Laboratory seeks an outstanding scientist to strengthen the group’s expanding efforts in the theory of quantum information science. The successful candidate will be a member of a research team that focuses on many aspects of quantum computing, including quantum algorithms, quantum simulation, and noisy intermediate-scale quantum computing (NISQ).

The candidate is expected to lead a competitive and internationally visible research program, and to successfully propose and develop research initiatives in emerging areas of research in quantum information theory.

We are particularly interested in experts with a background in quantum error correction, fault-tolerant quantum computing, error mitigation, and/or quantum-device verification, but all candidates with expertise in quantum computing will be considered.

Scientist 2 $94,100 - $155,700

The candidate should be able to work effectively as part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary group conducting research on topics that include (but are not limited to) quantum machine learning, quantum simulation, condensed matter physics, quantum physics, quantum foundations, quantum metrology and sensing.

Scientist 3 $113,100 - $190,900

In addition to above details, the candidate is expected to have demonstrated leadership skills. Through active collaboration with LANL researchers and industry partners, the candidate will also enhance the broader quantum information and quantum matter research programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Minimum Job Requirements:

- Broad knowledge of quantum computing and quantum physics. - Outstanding record of publications in leading scientific journals. - Ability to mentor postdocs and students. - Excellent oral and written communication skills.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

- Demonstrated experience with proposal writing in the general area of quantum computing. - Demonstrated ability to lead projects and research teams. - National and international stature in his/her field of research as demonstrated by publications, invited presentations, professional service and/or professional honors.

Education/Experience at lower level: Ph.D. in theoretical physics, computer science, or a related field, with a focus on quantum information, quantum computing or quantum physics.

Education/Experience at higher level: Ph.D. in theoretical physics, computer science, or a related field, with a focus on quantum information, quantum computing or quantum physics and 5 years relevant work experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated contributions to the area of quantum computing, quantum algorithms, quantum error correction, and/or quantum sensing; Ease of collaboration with researchers in related fields; Leadership potential; Experience with team building and proposal writing; Ability to foster an environment of creativity and intellectual vibrancy; Ability to tackle complex problems using a multidisciplinary approach; Ability to integrate with National Lab (and DOE) culture; An understanding of LANL’s research portfolio and mission.
