School of Integrative Plant Science

Plant Pathology and Plant Microbe Biology Section

Cornell University

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty and staff. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being. CALS is fundamentally invested in improving the lives of people, their environments and their communities both in New York State and around the world.

Position Function

The Huberman lab in the Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology section of the School of Integrative Plant Sciences at Cornell University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position starting spring 2022 on a project entitled “Identifying fungicide mode of action using high throughput functional genomics”. This project aims to use massively parallel screens and transcriptional profiling to identify the genetic mechanisms involved in responding to fungicides. We will work in two fungi with unique genetic and genomic tools available: the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa and the oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides. The Huberman lab uses tools ranging from classical genetics to high-throughput screens combined with molecular and cell biology to answer questions about how fungi respond to environmental stimuli. For more information on the lab: https://blogs.cornell.edu/huberman/.

Specific key responsibilities include:

·         Performing and optimizing cell and molecular microbiology, genetics, and genomics experiments to test hypotheses

·         Analyzing high-throughput sequencing data using standard and custom bioinformatics tools

·         Writing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals

·         Communicating with collaborators internal and external to the lab

·         Participating in lab meetings

·         Presenting original research at conferences

·         Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students

Anticipated Division of Time

Lab research 65%

Data analysis 20%

Writing 10%

Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students 5%

Requirements

A PhD with a strong background in molecular microbiology and genetics (or related discipline) is required. Experience working with eukaryotic microbes, bioinformatic tools, and programming in python is helpful but not required. The ability to work in teams, as well as an ability to work independently, is essential.

Supervision Exercised

This position may supervise students.
