The Department of Radiology at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School has an immediate opening for an Assistant Professor position (non-tenure) to be engaged in a lead role in basic and/or translational imaging research in multiple imaging modalities including MRI, PET, CT, SPECT, microCT, and OCT with a particular focus in MRI. The candidate will be working closely with the image processing & analysis core (iPAC) and the advanced MRI center (AMRIC) and will be responsible for method development, study execution, data analysis and interpretation, and training personnel in clinical and pre-clinical imaging techniques. Within a diverse team of experts in the areas of machine learning, deep learning, image processing, biomedical engineering, medical physics, radiology, and computer science, the candidate will also develop essentials of algorithms and image processing needed to extend the AI capabilities of medical imaging in iPAC. There will be a substantial commitment to writing of manuscripts and grant applications. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for training graduate/medical students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows in research methodology. Required Qualifications: • PhD or equivalent in biomedical engineering, medical physics, or related field. • 3+ years of postdoctoral experience in medical imaging in academia and/or industry. • Strong programming skills in MATLAB, Python, and relevant ML libraries such as scikit-learn, TensorFLow and PyTorch. • Extensive experience in image processing and post processing data skills. Experience and proficiency with the following software: MATLAB, Paravision, Topspin, Amira, FSL, ANTS, AFNI, SPM, DSIstudio, ITK-SNAP, MIPAV, ImageJ, Python, Perl, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and R preferred. • Extensive experience with operating Philips and Bruker MR systems for clinical and pre-clinical imaging experiments. • Knowledge of Philips and Bruker Paravision pulse sequence programming and image reconstruction will be a plus. • Knowledge and experience of a wide range of imaging/spectroscopy techniques including anatomical MRI, quantitative perfusion and diffusion measurement, functional MRI, and proton and multinuclear spectroscopy. • Experienced with RF coils, MR components and MR systems design. • A demonstrated ability to undertake independent research and to work as part of a multidisciplinary research team to successfully deliver research projects. • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, classification, regression, neural networks, etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks. • In-depth experience with modern and classical machine learning methods and statistical foundation with broad knowledge of supervised and unsupervised techniques is a plus. • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects and develop and recommend solutions to complex problems often under time constraints. • Must possess strong analytical, writing and successful program/project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to work well in a dynamic fast-paced environment. • Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect research/personal data according to protocols and principles of good research practice. • Proven ability to collaborate with others. • A passion for tackling challenging problems and developing creative solutions. • A drive for self-development with a focus on scientific know-how. • Proven ability to collaborate with others. • Experience in healthcare industry is a plus. • Communicate effectively with executive and clinical personnel. • Capability of functioning as a student mentor with strong organizational and administrative skills. • Excellent communication skills as demonstrated by lead authorship of published research communications and oral presentation at international conferences. Responsibilities: • Work very closely with the AMRIC team in the acquisition, development, and execution of pre-clinical and/or clinical imaging protocols. Oversee maintenance and troubleshooting of pre-clinical imaging platforms. • Work very closely with the iPAC team in mining and analyzing structured/unstructured data to create algorithms to identify information-rich features in large target datasets. • Deliver image processing and post-processing quality control, critical analysis, and biological interpretation of data. • Analyze, collate and prepare data package summaries using MATLAB, Paravision, Topspin, Bruker MicroCT CTAn, FSL, ANTs, AFNI, SPM, Amira, DSIstudio, ITK-SNAP, MIPAV, ImageJ, Python, Perl, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and/or R as appropriate. • Formulate innovative solutions to problems where machine learning is applicable and recommend a scalable, reliable hardware/software/machine learning platform. • Solve problems as they arise and communicate potential roadblocks to manage expectations. • Assist with manuscript preparation, grant submissions, and progress reports. • Provide training to faculty, staff, postdocs, and students in pre-clinical imaging techniques including in vivo and ex vivo approaches and their respective data processing, analysis and interpretation. • Maintain and establish SOPs for iPAC and AMRIC procedures and analysis pipelines.
