Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in theoretical astrophysics at the Center for Astrophysical Sciences of Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Working under the supervision of Professor Julian Krolik, the successful candidate will join a group of researchers studying virtually all aspects of the physics of accretion onto black holes. Topics under active investigation include: how to link the underlying dynamics of accretion to the spectrum, time-dependence, and polarization of light emitted; what determines the power and structure of relativistic jets; how the matter from tidally-disrupted stars accretes and emits light; the physical mechanisms leading to black hole merger; and electromagnetic signals associated with black hole mergers. Collaborators in this program include members of the astrophysical theory group at JHU and also Omer Blaes (UCSB), Manuela Campanelli (RIT), John Hawley (Virginia), Tsvi Piran (Hebrew U.), and Jim Stone (Princeton). Experience with numerical MHD simulations is desirable, but not essential.
The starting date for this position is flexible, but could be as early as spring or as late as fall, 2013. Officially it must be renewed annually, but it is intended to extend for three years. The successful candidate will officially have the rank of assistant research scientist, a position at JHU that carries full benefits, including health insurance.
The JHU Center for Astrophysical Sciences and the adjacent Space Telescope Science Institute form a large and lively astrophysical community. In this environment, the post-doc will be immersed in first-rate work on everything from experimental cosmology to extra-solar planets.
