Professor of Scenic and Lighting Design, 1-year term

The Pomona College Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance. This is a full-time, 1-year, non-tenure-track, term position. The individual holding the position is expected to teach 3 courses per academic year which could include: Introduction to Lighting Design, Scene Design for Stage and Screen, and The Dramatic Imagination (a broad-based introduction to design course), as well as design the set or lights for one departmental show each semester. A successful candidate would have experience in scenic design and painting, CAD drafting, lighting, and projection design, and have experience instructing students in new digital technologies and multimedia design for live performance.

This faculty member will also supervise independent studies and/or senior projects in design as the need arises. While there is no expectation of ongoing scholarship or professional work outside the Department, such activities are encouraged as long as the individual clearly understands the full-time nature of the position and the expectation of advising students and participating actively in the life of the Department.

An M.F.A. and/or Ph.D. in Theatre Arts is required. Teaching experience at the college level and a significant body of professional work outside of academe are greatly preferred. The candidate must understand the goals of theatre education within the liberal arts mission of the College and embody these goals in their teaching. We seek an artist-teacher whose pedagogy, creative activity, and professional outlook uplifts diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion and who has experience working with diverse student populations.

Pomona College, located 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, is the founding member of the Claremont Colleges, which also include Claremont McKenna, Scripps, Pitzer, Harvey Mudd, and Claremont Graduate University. Collectively, the Claremont Colleges constitute an academic community of 6,500 students. As a result, Pomona students enjoy both the personalized instruction and close faculty-student interactions afforded by a small liberal arts college as well as the intellectual and extracurricular resources typically found at much larger universities.

This appointment begins July 1, 2022.

To apply, please send: a cover letter; a curriculum vitae; 3 references; and 2 brief statements, one addressing the candidate’s teaching philosophy and one addressing the candidate’s experiences in working with students from diverse backgrounds and advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusivity to:
