Postdoctoral Associate in Barley Breeding and
Pathology The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty and staff. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being. CALS is fundamentally invested in improving the lives of people, their environments and their communities both in New York state and around the world. Position Function The Sorrells (https://cals.cornell.edu/mark-earl-sorrells) research program utilizes appropriate technologies encompassing molecular genetics, physiology, pathology, and breeding to research strategies that contribute to the development of superior crop varieties for both conventional and organic cropping systems. We have an active field breeding program that develops small grains varieties for the northeastern U.S. and a large well-equipped research laboratory. The Bergstrom (https://cals.cornell.edu/gary-carlton-bergstrom) research program is well equipped for diagnosis of crop diseases, microscopic and molecular characterization of pathogen isolates, and inoculum production of pathogens for plant inoculation. The successful candidate will plan, design, and conduct barley crosses to generate breeding populations segregating for disease resistance that can lead to new varieties. The candidate should be familiar with breeding methods for disease resistance, variety development and be able to manage a large volume of materials with careful record keeping. The candidate will evaluate breeding lines in greenhouse and field experiments, generate and analyze the data and contribute to the writing of manuscripts, grant reports and future grant applications. This is a full-time (100% FTE) position and will be located in Ithaca, NY. The initial appointment is for a one-year term with extension contingent on funding and successful performance.
