Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

A postdoctoral position in experimental cosmology is available within the Department of Physics at the University of Texas at Austin. Candidates with experience in experimental physics or astrophysics are encouraged to apply. Particular areas of interest include millimeter/submillimeter optical metrology, cryogenics, instrument field-deployment, and balloon-borne experiments. The position will involve a combination of laboratory testing, instrument design and fabrication, and data collection/analysis.

The successful candidate will work with Prof. Nicholas Galitzki on one of several projects: • Development of the cryogenic camera, optical system, and associated metrology techniques for the proposed Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope Observatory (BLAST-Obs). • Research opportunities within the CMB-S4 collaboration, specifically with the small aperture telescope design and associated technologies. • Research focused on the implementation of the Simons Observatory small aperture telescope field calibration and the development of the associated pipeline and analysis software using data from on-site calibration and observations.

The position will start in 2023 with flexibility on the specific start date. The initial appointment is for two years, extendable to a third year, subject to availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

The candidate will join the excitement of a broad community of active researchers in cosmology and related physics and astrophysics, with members of the Physics and Astronomy Departments, including the Texas Center for Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (TCCAP), the Weinberg Theory Group, the Center for Gravitational Physics, and McDonald Observatory. The candidate will also have access to the world-class supercomputing facilities of the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC).

Applications should include a cover letter, CV, list of publications, a statement of research accomplishments and current interests (up to 3 pages), and three letters of recommendation. The completion of a PhD is required prior to the start of the appointment. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2022.
