POSITIONS IN ACTUARIAL SCIENCE

GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY invites applications for one or more full-time tenure-track faculty positions in actuarial science in the Department of Risk Management and Insurance at the Robinson College of Business. We are open to hiring at any level (assistant, associate, or full professor), but are primarily interested in applications from entry-level or untenured junior scholars. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2023. The salary level, benefits, and course load for this position are competitive.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent international degree from an accredited institution (in actuarial science, statistics, applied mathematics, economics, finance, or related fields) or have advanced to Ph.D. candidacy and will complete the doctoral degree within six months of the start date. Applicants at the assistant professor level should have the capability to publish in top actuarial, risk management, statistics/econometrics, economics, finance, and/or applied mathematics journals in the broad area of actuarial science. Applicants at more senior levels are expected to have established research records and have achieved national and international prominence, commensurate with the level of seniority. We are especially interested in candidates who are interested in carrying out research at the interface between data analytics, actuarial science, and risk management. An ideal candidate would conduct research using insurance data and/or analyze empirical insurance problems using cutting-edge quantitative methods (which could include machine learning or big data techniques). Candidates with an interest in actuarial science problems related to climate change, health insurance, novel insurance technology (InsurTech), and actuarial analytics are particularly welcome. Teaching requirements and research support are highly competitive with major research universities.

Applicants are required to hold an actuarial credential from any of the major professional actuarial societies or should be on track to obtain one soon after the appointment.

ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

The mission of the Department of Risk Management and Insurance at Georgia State University is to better understand how risks faced by individuals, institutions, and societies can be more accurately measured and more efficiently managed. Faculty members have risk-related research interests including behavioral economics, experimental methods, actuarial science, mathematical finance, econometrics, household finance, corporate decision-making, insurance economics, and among others. The department is one of the oldest and most influential risk management programs in the U.S. and has a distinguished history of serving students, alumni, and the risk management profession for more than 60 years; it is currently rated #4 in the U.S. News and World Report ranking of RMI programs. GSU ranks #2 in actuarial science research among all North American business schools (U. Nebraska – Lincoln rankings) and holds a Center of Actuarial Excellence designation from the Society of Actuaries.
