Seeking 3-Year Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in Climate Change Education and Communication

In 2022, Duke announced its Climate Commitment, with one of its primary pillars being the development of climate change fluency among all members of the Duke community. Central to this effort is the infusion of scholarly conversations about climate change throughout the undergraduate curriculum. The Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University is seeking a talented early-career scholar with an interest in climate change education and communication for a three year appointment to: (1) support the University Course “Let’s Talk About Climate Change” (learn more at LINK); (2) develop their own undergraduate course in climate change as a follow-up to this survey course; and (3) to work as a liaison between Duke faculty engaged in climate change scholarship and staff in the Office of Learning Innovation, the Office of Alumni Engagement, the Office of Communication, and Duke Online Learning in developing innovative climate change content for broader audiences.

Qualifications: We are seeking a scholar from any discipline. The ideal candidate will have: conducted dissertation research that engaged the topic of climate change; substantial training or experience in college teaching; and enthusiasm for and demonstrated interest in both science communication and pedagogical innovation.

Opportunities: This position will provide the successful applicant with significant opportunities to build their teaching and science communication portfolio. The postdoctoral scholar will have the chance to work with faculty and experts from across Duke University and throughout Duke’s extensive alumni network. The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with a mentoring committee composed of UNIV 102 conveners Emily Bernhardt (Duke Department of Biology) and Norman Wirzba (Duke Divinity School), Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment Toddi Steelman, and Duke Sustainability Director Tavey McDaniel Capps.

Review of applications will begin on January 30th and will continue until a suitable candidate is identified. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for zoom interviews and top candidates will be invited for a campus interview. The start date could be as soon as March 1, 2023 and we plan to fill the position no later than June 1, 2023.
