Position Description:

We seek a Research & Development Engineer to work in the in-house electronics design facility, the Detector Development Laboratory (DDL), in the Penn State departments of Physics and of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The successful candidate will work in the DDL in working on a variety of collaborative projects under the guidance of faculty in the two departments and in collaboration with a team of talented engineers in the DDL.

Candidate(s) will contribute to the development, implementation, and validation of instrumentation to be used in physics and astrophysics experiments, including spaceflight hardware and hardware installed in remote locations. The projects will range from satellite-and balloon-based observatories to polar locations to deep underground experiments, each with their own set of demanding design criteria.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with any of the following: FPGA firmware design; photomultiplier tubes (PMTs, or silicon photomultipliers, SiPMs) and their characterization, readout, and high voltage systems; high-frequency electronics and/or antennas; printed circuit board design, fabrication and testing; and development of ruggedized systems for deployment in challenging extreme environments. Experience with specialized NASA requirements for space qualification is highly desirable. Strong interpersonal and teaching skills are required since the candidate will be working with or overseeing the work of undergraduate majors, graduate students, and postdocs in all aspects of electronics design and testing. Keen interest in keeping up to date with the newest developments in electronics circuitry is expected.

This position will be filled as an Research and Development Engineer 2 and requires a Bachelors' degree in an Engineering or Science related discipline plus two years' related experience. Preference will be given to applicants with a Master’s, Ph.D., and/or Postdoc in Physics, Astronomy, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, additional years of relevant experience, and/or experience working with spaceflight hardware. This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding.
