The Head of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Department leads the work of natural sciences and engineering subject liaisons and coordinates the development of library collections, services, and resources for the sciences and engineering disciplines. Additionally, the Head of the Natural Sciences and Engineering actively engages with faculty, students, visiting scholars, and staff in one or more selected departments. They collaborate with colleagues to provide and promote library resources and services that support these fields; manage the Libraries’ collections in these areas; and provide specialized and general research assistance and instruction to library users.

Responsibilities Head of Natural Sciences & Engineering • Partners with the Associate University Librarian for Research and Public Services, other Department Heads, and colleagues to evaluate and develop services and advance scholarly activities in the Duke community, especially those related to the natural sciences and engineering • Leads, trains, and supervises subject librarians in the department, including goal-setting and performance reviews • Participates in governance of Duke University Libraries’ collections activities, funding allocation, and policy development across the disciplines • Manages assigned general collections funds and oversees collections funds held by members of Natural Sciences and Engineering; co-manages the combined reference fund for Perkins/Bostock and Lilly Libraries • Convenes meetings of Natural Sciences and Engineering and communicates the group’s activities to library and campus stakeholders • Represents the Natural Sciences and Engineering department on appropriate policy-setting committees • Other duties as assigned

Research Support and Engagement • Provides specialized research consultations for students, faculty, staff, and visiting scholars • Develops outreach strategies to build relationships with faculty and researchers that promote library expertise and services • Identifies current and emerging user needs to help inform the development of library programs, services, and partnerships • Promotes issues and services related to disciplinary research practices, data, publishing, and scholarly communication as appropriate Teaching and Learning • Uses teaching strategies that foster an inclusive learning experience for students • Partners with faculty to provide library workshops and instructional materials for relevant courses in the curriculum, including first-year writing as needed • Teaches disciplinary research tools and skills for both undergraduate and graduate students • Develops and/or offers workshops in partnership with campus programs when relevant and as needed • Provides orientations and tours for user groups

Collections • Coordinates the work of the Natural Sciences and Engineering librarians on collective collections decision-making, collections analysis, and team projects; fosters collaboration with other subject librarians and collections services staff at Duke and with relevant colleagues beyond Duke to facilitate acquisition and access to materials • Develops and manages library collections in relevant disciplines with a focus on diversity of formats, perspectives, and languages • Promotes collections and resources to Duke’s researchers

Collective Responsibilities • Creates a sense of belonging and success for students and other patrons with a focus on recognizing the value of diverse backgrounds and life experiences • Serves on departmental, library, and/or university teams and working groups as appropriate; collaborates effectively with team members to meet project goals • Provides general research support and library information via chat, email, in person, and video conference • Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity. • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities • Supervises up to 6 librarians in the Natural Sciences and Engineering department

Education: Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or an advanced degree in a relevant subject field with appropriate experience.

Experience: Required: Supervisory and project management experience; demonstrated ability to empower, delegate, and build consensus across multiple, diverse constituencies; proficiency with information resources in a variety of formats and subject areas, including the sciences or a related field; teaching or library instruction experience; flexibility and demonstrated success as a self-starter; demonstrated ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative environment; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills as well as a strong commitment to public service; interest in and aptitude for learning emerging technologies; commitment to data-informed decision-making.

Preferred: Three years of relevant professional experience and strong academic background in the sciences or a relevant field; experience providing research support, preferably in an academic setting; knowledge of scholarly communication in the sciences and concepts related to open access; experience with assessment tools and methods; demonstrated record of ongoing professional development.

Salary and Benefits Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; the anticipated range is $80,000-$100,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 14 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
