Fermilab is seeking an Equipment Engineer/Staff Engineer I. This individual will manage and maintain performance of state-of-the-art materials characterization equipment used for analysis of both superconducting radiofrequency resonator cavities for accelerator applications as well as superconducting qubits for quantum information science. They are expected to train new users, ensure safety compliance, and carry out projects aimed at improving the operations of the facility. 

You Will: 
  •  Maintain performance of the 2 SEMs, XPS, and SIMS on day-to-day basis.
  • Serve as point of contact with instrument vendors to address unexpected issues. 
  • Train new users on safely using instrumentation. 
  • Ensuring safety compliance throughout facility through coordination with Research Safety Office. 
  • Plan and carry out small projects to improve the operations of the Materials Science Lab. 
  • Assist in the developments of cost estimates as well as the monitoring of budgetary obligations. 
  • Serve on or takes a lead role in safety panels, review committees, and other subcommittees as assigned. 
  • May participate in technical conferences and publication. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. 
  • Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position. 

We Are Looking For: 
  • Bachelor’s with 4+ years of engineering experience, or a Master’s with 2+ years of engineering experience or PhD in Physics, Materials Science or related disciplines from an ABET accredited institution by the time of appointment. 
  • Strong background in surface science is preferred.

  • Experience with the following tools is preferred: XPS ToF-SIMS SEM
