SLAC’s Office of Strategic Planning is seeking a Director to lead strategic development, including the planning and execution of key Science and Technology initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity to refine and advance the vision of a growing multi-purpose national lab tackling critical challenges through breakthrough R&D and unique scientific user facilities. The role will interface with broad and diverse constituencies, including senior management, faculty and staff at SLAC and Stanford University. The position will report to the SLAC Deputy Director for Science & Technology (DDS&T).

Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Directs the activities of the SLAC’s Office of Strategic Planning (OSP) working with SLAC leadership to develop and execute the lab-wide science and technology strategy. The OSP Director is accountable for overseeing the institutional strategy and planning activities, including SLAC strategic investment allocation
  • The SLAC science and technology strategy includes major initiatives, emerging science directions, cross-organizational science initiatives, strategic partnerships, and technology transfer and commercialization (as captured in the Lab Agenda, Annual Lab Plan, Strategic Investment Portfolio and related SLAC instruments)
  • Responsible for SLAC Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program (LDRD) which is a major component of the SLAC Strategic Investment Portfolio
  • Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, mentorship, personal development and performance for direct reports. Oversees three FTEs (one project coordinator, one strategic planning manager, one senior associate for strategic development) and coordinates the planning group consisting of matrixed participants (~6-10) from across the SLAC directorates.
  • Develops, manages and implements the institutional planning process (as described in the SLAC Management Plan), and translates strategy to long-, mid- and short-term goals and deliverables for strategic initiatives – with support of OSP team, and following the guidance of SLAC leadership. This includes identifying and evaluating potential growth opportunities in new science and technology areas or programs for SLAC, identifying critical action items and issues, developing recommendations, and reporting findings to senior management and advisory committees. Primary interactions will be with the SLAC Deputy Director for Science & Technology (DDS&T), SLAC Director, the Associate Laboratory Directors (ALDs) and other deputies
  • Support the development, technical review and implementation of major strategic proposals, business plans and projects. Develop frameworks for ongoing evaluation of both emerging and established strategic initiatives or programs and implement them towards strengthening and advancing these initiatives 
  • Provide as-needed support to SLAC leadership, for technical analyses, organization, and execution in other areas of strategic planning
  • Other duties may also be assigned 
To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences or engineering and eight years of relevant experience or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience in strategic planning or execution of major science and technology initiatives or programs and experience in developing program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Strong scientific and technical background, knowledge base, and breadth of interest
  • Working knowledge of the national lab enterprise and of the federal agencies sponsoring national lab efforts
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory, planning and change management skills.
  • Excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), negotiation, and interpersonal skills. Able to cultivate partnerships across all levels of the institution and external partners. Able to influence people, solve problems, troubleshoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp principles and concepts related to new research areas, identifying important challenges and assessing potential impact
  • Advanced expertise in business and management computer applications and databases.
  • Subject matter expertise for area(s) of responsibility, and demonstrated fluency across a broad S&T landscape
  • Ability to multi-task and manage deadlines.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
  • A Master’s degree in natural sciences or engineering and five years of relevant experience or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience in strategic planning or execution of major science and technology initiatives or programs and experience in developing program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in strategic planning or execution of major S&T initiatives or programs
  • Experience in a leading strategy consulting firm or an MBA, in addition to an advanced degree in a scientific or engineering discipline will be considered a plus
