The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in theoretical particle physics to begin in Fall 2024. Candidates in areas of either neutrino/very weakly interacting particle phenomenology in laboratory and astroparticle physics, or in the areas of applications of quantum information/computation in quantum field theory and particle physics are encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to have an established publication record in at least one of the research areas listed above.

The successful candidate is expected to build a visible, funded research program and to be an effective teacher at the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as to supervise graduate thesis research. The successful candidate is also expected to provide service to the department, college and university and to help support the department’s commitment to advance diversity and equity. Required qualifications include a PhD in physics or closely related discipline, strong commitment to effective teaching and mentoring of students, potential to develop an internationally recognized research program, good communication skills, and experience with strategies for fostering a welcoming and inclusive learning environment. Postdoctoral experience, successful supervision of undergraduate or graduate students, overlapping interests with members of the particle theory group and interest in developing innovative methods to teach quantum physics are desirable qualifications. The particle physics theory group has active research programs in the areas of neutrino and dark matter phenomenology related to ground-based and space-based experiments, lattice gauge theory, quantum gravity, relativistic nuclear physics and quantum computation in lattice field theory. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the anchor of the QuLAT collaboration and has synergetic efforts in experimental particle physics (DUNE, EUSO-SBPB2, CMS and ATLAS) and in quantum information for condensed matter physics (spintronics, nitrogen vacancies, photonics). The University of Iowa is a leading public university located in Iowa City, a midsize community and UNESCO City of Literature with a high quality of life. It is the host of the Writers Workshop, Hancher Auditorium and The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

To apply, please visit the submission website Jobs@UIowa at and refer to requisition 74834. Materials should be submitted electronically, including a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement that includes how the candidate has fostered an inclusive and equitable learning environment and email contact information for three letters of recommendation. Note that references will be automatically contacted through the Jobs@UIowa application system and prompted to submit a letter of reference/recommendation electronically.
