Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is seeking candidates to fill the Frederick Reines Endowed Professorship, a new endowed faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure or Professor with tenure to be held jointly in the CWRU College of Arts and Science (CAS) and the Case School of Engineering (CSE). This endowed chair is named in honor of Frederick Reines, the Nobel Prize-winning experimental physicist and engineer who in 1956, together with Clyde Cowan detected the elusive neutrino, a subatomic particle which plays a key role in nuclear decay. Frederick Reines came to Case Western Reserve University in 1956, where, together with his students, he designed and deployed a series of new experiments to detect neutrinos created in the atmosphere due to interacting cosmic rays.
CWRU is seeking an outstanding faculty member to conduct interdisciplinary research with a joint appointment in two different academic departments: one in the Department of Physics or some other appropriate department in the CAS and one in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) or some other appropriate department in CSE.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a vision of research and teaching that advances CWRU in cross-disciplinary research in the area of advanced materials with a focus on materials with properties arising from novel aspects of quantum mechanics, including but not limited to (1) 2D materials ; (2) topological materials ; (3) novel materials for semiconductor-based devices; (4) quantum sensing materials with applications in biological devices/platforms/systems; and/or (5) materials for energy and power applications.
The applicant will be expected to conduct research, teaching, and service and must be committed to working with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students and creating an inclusive environment. The successful candidate will have access to excellent facilities in the Advanced Manufacturing and Mechanical Reliability Center (AMMRC), Case Metals Processing Lab (CMPL), Nitinol Commercialization Accelerator Lab (NCAL), Swagelok Center for Surface Analysis of Materials (SCSAM), the Materials for Opto/Electronics Research and Education (MORE) Center, the Center for Solar Durability and Lifetime Extension (SDLE), Electronics Design Center (EDC), High Performance Computing (HPC), and Sears Think[box], an innovation center and maker space.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent in physics, engineering, or a related degree and should have demonstrated an outstanding record of research and scholarship. In addition, an appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank with tenure will require evidence of a national and/or international reputation for research expertise, a distinguished record of publication, funded research, and successfully applied pedagogies for mentoring students and researchers and fulfill other qualifications such that the candidate will merit tenure in both College of Arts and Sciences and the Case School of Engineering.
