Appl Deadline: (posted 2023/08/29, listed until 2024/02/29)
Position Description:

There is a postdoctoral opening in the group of Prof. Mikhail Lemeshko at the Institute of Science and Technology (IST) Austria. The Lemeshko group works at the interface of theoretical condensed-matter, chemical, and AMO physics. Our interests are mostly related to quantum physics of molecules and include (but are not limited to):
  • Topological states of molecules: we aim to discover novel states of small molecules and to classify them using topology with possible applications to quantum information processing. We focus both on orientational states of polyatomic molecules near equilibrium as well as on Floquet-engineering of molecular states driven by short laser pulses.
  • Electron transport through chiral molecules in the presence of a many-body environment, with applications to chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS effect), unconventional superconductivity, and organic spintronics without fields. Experimental collaborations: Prof. Yossi Paltiel (Hebrew U Jerusalem) and others.
  • Physics and applications of the recently discovered angulon quasiparticle.

The angulon represents a quantum impurity (an electron,  an atom, or a molecule) dressed by a cloud of many-particle excitations carrying angular momentum (e.g. phonons, particle-hole excitations, etc.). We are using angulons to describe angular momentum dynamics in a variety of systems, from molecules in quantum solvents to Rydberg atoms in ultracold gases to electrons coupled to phonons in solids (with applications to ultrafast magnetism). Experimental collaborations: Prof. Henrik Stapelfeldt (U Aarhus) and others.

  • Quantum many-body physics of molecular materials, such as hybrid organic-inorganic lead-halide perovskites. We aim to develop simple models providing insights into the electronic properties of complex compounds containing rotating molecules.

  • Manipulation and spectroscopy of molecules using twisted light carrying orbital angular momentum. Experimental collaboration: Prof. Oliver Heckl (U Vienna) and others.
We are looking for strongly motivated candidates experienced in theoretical AMO and/or condensed-matter physics. The position is offered for 2 years (an extension is possible), with a flexible starting date. Highly qualified applicants are also encouraged to apply for the  IST-Bridge Fellowship.

Please provide your CV with a publications list, a brief research statement, and a minimum of 3 letters of recommendation.

PLEASE SEND YOUR DOCUMENTS TO PROF. LEMESHKO (mikhail.lemeshko@ist.ac.at) DIRECTLY.

You can provide a list of references that can be asked for a letter of recommendation, instead of arranging for the actual letters to be sent.

More information can be found on the group's website: http://lemeshko.ist.ac.at/. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Misha Lemeshko directly.
