Position Description: |
The research group of Prof. Polshyn at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria invites applications for a postdoctoral position funded under ERC Starting Grant “Orbital Chern Insulators in van der Waals Moiré Systems”. The successful candidate will experimentally investigate the nature and properties of integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall states and related electronic phases in moiré van der Waals heterostructures. Possible research projects will focus on either (1) low-temperature electronic transport measurements or (2) low-temperature scanning probe microscopy measurements of moiré van der Waals devices. Candidates with strong expertise in these techniques are especially encouraged to apply. More details about “Emergent electronic phenomena in 2D materials“ group at ISTA and its research could be found here: https://polshynlab.com The expected length of this apointment is three years: the initial appointment is for one year with an extension for another two years contingent on performance. The start date of the appointment is flexible. Responsibilities: • Design and carry out experiments to investigate the physics of integer and fractional Chern insulators and related electronic phases in moiré heterostructures. • Use nanofabrication facilities at ISTA to create novel devices of van der Waals heterostructures. Requirements: • Ph.D. in Physics (Experimental Condensed Matter) is required. • Strong expertise in either (1) low-temperature electronic transport measurements and operating a dilution refrigerator or in (2) low-temperature scanning probe microscopy techniques is required. • Expertise in micro-characterization and nanofabrication techniques is required. • Experience in working with van der Waals materials is strongly desired. Please submit your application via this portal. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. ISTA: The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) is a PhD
granting research institution dedicated to cutting-edge research in Physics,
Mathematics, Chemistry&Materials, Computer Science, and other disciplines.
The working language of ISTA is English. The campus of ISTA is in
the historic city of Klosterneuburg, on the picturesque outskirts of Vienna –
which has been voted as one of the most livable cities in the world. Vienna's
beautiful downtown and the Vienna international airport are conveniently within
reach by public transportation. ISTA was established in 2006 by the Federal
Government of Austria to facilitate world-class basic research and train the
next generation of scientific leaders. Although ISTA is less than two decades
old, it currently has about 70 research groups supported by state-of-the-art
infrastructure, with plans to grow to 90 groups in 2026. ISTA has a diverse international
population, with students, scientists, and staff from 72 countries. |
