Position Description

The Department of Physics and Materials Science at the University of Memphis (https://www.memphis.edu/physics/) is seeking highly qualified individuals for a tenure-track faculty position, at the Assistant Professor level, in the field of Radiation and Nuclear Physics to begin in Fall 2024. The department offers BS, MS, and PhD programs. The current faculty members are actively engaged in experimental and theoretical/computational research in the areas of energy materials/ materials, radiation physics, nanomaterials, biomaterials, nanophotonics, and astrophysics. The University of Memphis is an R1 public research university located in Memphis, TN, a vibrant, friendly, and affordable metropolitan city in the Mid-South. Memphis is home to multiple healthcare, logistics, and technology headquarters. The Memphis metropolitan area hosts many major medical research centers, hospitals and community partners, providing unique opportunities for partnership in research and education.

Minimum Position Qualifications: Prospective candidates must have a PhD in physics or a closely related discipline. Candidates with research experience beyond their PhDs are preferred. Prior formal or informal experience in outreach and teaching will be an advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain a robust and independent research program, receive extramural research funding, effectively teach at undergraduate and graduate levels, actively contribute to outreach, recruitment and retention initiatives, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students. Qualified candidates in radiation or nuclear physics, energy physics, or related fields including but not limited to medical physics, environmental physics, accelerator physics, and particle physics are encouraged to apply. Both experimental and computational (theoretical) will be considered.
