Position Description

Prof. Mario Collura, PI in Condensed Matter at SISSA (Trieste, Italy) seeks highly motivated postdoctoral researchers in the field of computational and theoretical methods for interacting many-body quantum systems out-of-equilibrium. The positions expected to be filled as per 1 December 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions are for 2-years.

We are looking for candidates in two main areas.

1) The first area of research concerns classical simulation of many-body quantum systems. The ambition is to enlarge our current computation/simulation toolbox, for instance, based on Matrix Product States, by exploiting next-generation tools, such as neural networks. This will allow to overcome the entanglement barrier in the simulation of out-of-equilibrium dynamics, to uncover never-seen-before equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium universal behaviours.

Ideal candidates in this area should have significant experience with modern computational techniques such as for example (Neural-Network Quantum States, Tensor Networks, etc). Alternatively, candidates with a more prominent analytical attitude (Condensed Matter theory, Statistical Physics, Machine Learning theory, etc) are also encouraged to apply, provided they have a record of successful collaborations with computational scientists.

The role is situated within a collaborative PRIN 2022 project, in collaboration with Prof. Vincenzo Alba from Pisa University. While the primary location is in Trieste, the candidate is expected to undertake short-term visits to Pisa few times a year.

2) The second area of research concerns the development of quantum algorithms, typically on near-term quantum hardware. In this area our main interests are: Variational Quantum Algorithms, sampling techniques with Tensor Network approaches and, quantum resource theories in general. The ambition is to develop hybrid algorithms (QAOA and other Variational Quantum Algorithms) for non-equilibrium state dynamics and observable measurement; mixed strategies based on machine learning and tensor-networks for non-equilibrium many-body systems; and to study the dynamics of quantum systems under different measurements protocol.

Ideal candidates should have experience with implementing and developing novel quantum algorithms, for example through basic computational tools such as Qiskit or similar. More analytically-oriented minds (in Quantum Information Theory, Learning theory etc) are also welcome to apply, provided they also have a taste for applications to problems in many-body Physics or related.

This position is founded within the PNRR NQSTI 2023. The position is fully based in Trieste and the candidate is strongly encouraged to collaborate as well with the other PIs involved in the project (Prof. M. Capone, Prof. G. Santoro, Prof. A. Silva).

Interested candidates should provide their expression of interest by sending a CV, two reference letters and a motivation letter indicating the main area of interest among the ones listed above. Applicants will nevertheless be considered for all the areas. The positions will be filled on a rolling basis.

SISSA (www.sissa.it) is a leading research and training institution (PhD School). The Physics Area at SISSA has connections with the several research Institutes in Trieste (ICTP, INFN, INAF, IFPU..). The campus is in a green area on the hills close to Trieste. SISSA offers to its community top tier research facilities (e.g. High Performance Computing facilities) and services (e.g. canteen and kindergarten services located on site, a gym…).
