Position Description:

The research group of Prof. Ruben Verresen, which will be established in the fall of 2024 at the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position. The research interests of the group broadly revolve around collective phenomena in entangled many-body systems, such as, e.g., (i) topological phases of matter and quantum criticality, (ii) exploring exotic states in quantum devices through analog or digital approaches (e.g., cold atoms, superconducting qubits), (iii) many-body quantum information theory (e.g., the interplay of CMP concepts and quantum measurements or dissipation), (iv) tensor networks as an analytic and numerical tool; see for more information.

The successful applicant is encouraged to collaborate broadly with the quantum community at UChicago (and beyond), which hosts many other theory groups (e.g., the groups of Profs. Aash Clerk, Giulia Galli, Liang Jiang, Michael Levin, Dam Son), as well as a multitude of experimental groups working on quantum systems, ranging from AMO to solid state. Moreover, if applicants express an interest in a joint appointment with particular research groups at UChicago, this can be explored.

The position will offer a competitive salary, and will include a travel budget. Additional information on benefits and being a postdoc at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering can be found at The default starting date is Fall 2024, but this is flexible. Applicants can submit via the AJO portal, uploading (1) a CV including publication list, (2) two or more reference letters, and (3) a research statement. For inquiries about the position, please contact Prof. Verresen at Consideration of applications will begin on November 1 and will continue until the position is filled or the search is closed; early submission is encouraged.

We seek a diverse pool of applicants who wish to join an academic community that places the highest value on rigorous inquiry and encourages diverse perspectives, experiences, groups of individuals, and ideas to inform and stimulate intellectual challenge, engagement, and exchange.
