Assistant Professor in Experimental Particle Physics
Department of Physics
New York University Arts & Science

The Department of Physics at New York University (NYU) invites applications for a faculty position in experimental particle physics (EPP). Applications will be considered at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level. We are looking for applications from innovative researchers with records of excellence who would add new directions to the NYU EPP group’s research.

The NYU EPP group has been a National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported member of the ATLAS experiment since 2006. The group’s primary physics interests are Higgs properties and Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) scenarios. The group’s current High Luminosity-Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) ATLAS upgrade involvements include development of the missing transverse momentum trigger and of the Liquid Argon Calorimeter back-end electronics. The group also has a leadership role in the milliQan experiment at the LHC.  The NYU EPP group benefits from close connections with our Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics, which includes a broad set of activities in particle theory, astrophysics, and cosmology.

The successful candidate is expected to work as an active member of our EPP group, to initiate and lead searches for BSM physics, lead outreach efforts, and to contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. While not required, previous ATLAS experience, including that on the ATLAS HL-LHC upgrade, is highly valued. We strongly encourage applications that include plans to devote some effort to non-ATLAS BSM experiments.  We are especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. The Department values diversity among its faculty and welcomes applications from women, persons with disabilities, protected veterans, and underrepresented minorities. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2024, pending administrative and budgetary approval.

Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2023.

Arts and Science at NYU is at the heart of a leading research university that spans the globe. We seek scholars of the highest caliber who embody the diversity of the United States as well as the global society in which we live. We strongly encourage applications from women, racial and ethnic minorities, and other individuals who are underrepresented in the profession, across color, creed, race, ethnic and national origin, physical ability, gender and sexual identity, or any other legally protected basis. NYU affirms the value of differing perspectives on the world as we strive to build the strongest possible university with the widest reach. Qualifications:
A successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field and an ability to conduct original research that is documented by peer-reviewed publications. Previous experience in teaching and outreach is highly desirable.
