Position Description

Job Summary: The School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences (CDIS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is in the midst of a multi-year effort to build excellence in computing and data ethics across its three constituent departments of Computer Sciences, the Information School, and Statistics. This position will be an academic nine-month, tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level to begin in August 2024. The tenure home will be one of the above three departments, and it will be determined at the time of hire based on the selected candidate's qualifications and interests. Candidates may state departmental preferences in their cover letters but are not required to do so.

Topics of specific interest include: issues of algorithmic fairness, accountability, and transparency, safety, privacy, surveillance, content moderation, platform governance, trust, misinformation, issues of transparency in data collection and processing, reproducibility of analyses, and replicability of experiments (all broadly construed).

Applicants should demonstrate an interest in and ability to do collaborative, cross-disciplinary work that cuts across the boundaries of the three departments and attracts funding support. The successful candidate will contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.

Job Responsibilities: Faculty responsibilities include research and publication, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, student advising (both master's and PhD), and service. The successful candidate will conduct scholarly research resulting in publications in high-quality peer-reviewed scholarly venues, acquire external funding to support research and graduate students, and design and teach bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level courses (both online and in person). The candidate will be committed to service within the department, university, and profession appropriate to faculty rank. The successful candidate, as a member of the College of L&S, will proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college's commitment to diversity among all aspects of their teaching, research, and service. It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Education: PhD in Computer Sciences or similar by start of appointment.

Qualifications: Candidates should demonstrate evidence of creativity and excellence in teaching and scholarly research. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate experience with fostering or the ability to foster an inclusive and equity-centered teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive.

Additional Information: The new School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences (CDIS) is committed to interdisciplinary and cross-campus research collaborations, establishment of innovative educational programs in the intersection of computing and other domains, and engagement with high-impact, real- world challenges.
