Scope of Job:
The College of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for a non-tenure-track Professor of Instruction position in the Department of Computer Science to begin in the fall of 2024. The Professor of Instruction is a faculty member dedicated to delivering high-quality undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentorship, and actively engaging in program administration, curriculum development, and educational research. The position is a 3-year appointment, renewable based on favorable annual evaluations and budget availability.
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's student body as a Professor of Instruction of Computer Science beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.
The Department of Computer Science currently has over fifteen faculty members and offers an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science in Computer Science, and an anticipated Ph.D. program in Computer Science with interdisciplinary applications starting in Fall 2024. In addition, the Department offers a range of research opportunities spanning theoretical foundations, systems engineering, and applications of Computer Science. Together, the programs prepare students for graduate study in Computer Science and technology-related fields, as well as careers in industry, particularly in project management, software engineering, data mining, machine learning, human computer interaction, and web design/development. Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have earned a doctorate in Computer Science, or a related field, at the time of appointment. Women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate is expected to have a strong commitment to teaching, developing creative and effective pedagogy, advising students, program development, and engaging in education research. The candidate should be able to teach a wide range of core computer science courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
UTRGV faculty will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and to advancing the university, college, and department missions. Faculty are also expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to promote access to post-secondary education to a diverse student body and to become one of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving emerging research institutions in the U.S.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.
UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
