The Associate in Research will be involved with the design and development of a medical device that is preparing for commercialization within the Deshusses laboratory at Duke University in collaboration with investigators in the School of Medicine. For details on the device, see Farling et al. (2020) Development of a novel intravascular oxygenator catheter: oxygen mass transfer properties across non-porous hollow fiber membranes. Biotechnol. Bioeng., https://doi.org/10.1002/bit.27574 The successful individual will collaborate with the existing development team. This is a full-time position starting immediately.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the technical development of novel medical device delivering oxygen directly to the blood in the intravascular space. This device will be used in critical care medicine. • Work cross-functionally between contract manufacturers and clinical experts to design quality products

• Create prototypes, assemblies and part drawings using CAD

• Perform and document testing of new prototypes as they are developed

• Manage external consultants when appropriate to accelerate project schedules

• Generate documentation for regulatory compliance of new designs including risk analyses, design history documentation, and other supporting quality documentation

• Perform other duties as required

Requirements

BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering with a mechanical focus

1-5 years experience with mechanical medical device design (Class II or III medical device preferred)

Experience designing with CAD

Experience in electronics and programming is a plus

Experience documenting designs within an established FDA compliant quality system is a plus

Ability to function independently and adapt in a changing environment, while effectively prioritizing workload and meeting deadlines

Demonstrated track record of identifying and solving problems efficiently

Strong work ethic and skills to work collaboratively as part of a team
