Position Description
We Are: The Fermilab Quantum Computing Co-Design Department is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join their team. The research project focuses on cutting-edge work in microwave-optical quantum transduction, aiming to create prototypes of quantum transducers capable of converting microwave and optical photons in both directions with high efficiency. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in both experimental and theoretical work developing protocols for interfacing, generating, and measuring entanglement between optical and microwave photons. The successful candidate will be part of a highly collaborative team and actively engage with Fermilab's scientists, engineers, and external collaborators. An ideal background for the candidate would be in applied or experimental physics and/or engineering or a related field. Fermilab is America’s outstanding laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole. Position Requirements: • PhD in Physics or in a relevant related field such as Engineering • PhD received within the last 3 years or in the upcoming year • Knowledge and understanding of quantum mechanics and quantum information science • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing • Ability to effectively work in large collaborations Desirable • Experience with optical testbeds, such as resonator/waveguide fabrication and/or characterization, free space, and fiber optics alignment • Ability to model and simulate quantum states, including those based on entanglement generation protocols • Knowledge of at least one of the following: superconducting qubits, electro-optic materials, optical communication, and quantum networks.
