Position Description
Lecturer, Department of Biology, Stanford University The Department of Biology seeks to hire one Lecturer who will participate in teaching in the newly vamped Neuroscience Track for undergraduate students, beginning in fall 2024. A key task for the Lecturer is to help teach a new course, Introduction to Neuroscience (Bio102) to be offered yearly in the Winter quarter starting 2025. This course will introduce key concepts and exciting research in neuroscience to students. The course spans all levels of inquiry, from molecules to cells, circuits, systems, and animal behavior. This is the first time an introductory neuroscience course is offered at Stanford and there are no prerequisites other than a keen curiosity about the brain. Thus, we expect that it will be taken by many freshmen, sophomores, as well as upper division students who major in diverse disciplines other than biology. The Lecturer is expected to develop the course together with the instructor in Autumn of 2024, particularly in preparing materials auxiliary to the lectures. In Winter of 2025, the Lecturer will organize the running of the course. These include directing the teaching assistants for additional sections, interfacing with the students, and working together with teaching assistants to make and grade the take-home problem sets, and organizing other logistics of a large course. Depending on the expertise and experience, the Lecturer may also contribute to teaching specific lectures. In addition to help with Bio102, the Lecturer is expected to help with other Neuroscience courses. Depending on the expertise and experience, the Lecturer may have the opportunity to develop new Neuroscience course(s). This appointment is for two years with a possibility of renewal. Successful candidates will have a PhD in neuroscience (or a related field) in hand no later than July 31, 2024. The position will begin in September 2024. To apply, please submit the following to Academic Jobs Online (AJO): (1) a cover letter that explains why you are applying for this position and addresses your qualifications, including demonstrated excellence in teaching and research; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) a teaching statement that discusses your approach to teaching; (4) a summary of your prior teaching experience and teaching evaluations, if applicable; and (5) three confidential letters of recommendation—at least one commenting on your teaching—which your recommenders will upload directly to AJO. The salary range for this position is approximately $80,000 - $85,000 for 2024-25. For additional information about Stanford’s Department of Biology, see https://biology.stanford.edu/.
