Position Description:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in theoretical high energy physics and particle phenomenology broadly construed. The successful candidate will be integrated into the Pittsburgh Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology Center (PITT PACC, https://www.pittpacc.pitt.edu/) and have access to its resources, which include funds for workshops and other scholarly activities. Subject to budgetary approval, this appointment would begin in fall 2025 or thereafter.

Competitive candidates demonstrate the ability to obtain funding for a creative, independent, and broad research program, to interface with existing efforts, and to initiate new research directions. Candidates must be able to teach effectively at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. We seek theorists with expertise in particle physics phenomenology, broadly defined. Present faculty members have expertise in collider phenomenology, precision calculations, effective field theory, particle cosmology, and physics beyond the Standard Model. There are also strong efforts in ATLAS, Belle II, and several neutrino experiments. Applicants who can enhance or extend existing programs are preferred. The position requires a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field.

Candidates from groups traditionally underrepresented in physics are strongly encouraged to apply. One of the major strategic goals of the University of Pittsburgh is to embrace diversity and inclusion; therefore, candidates should be committed to a program of teaching and research that will involve and support a diverse student population.

To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by November 15, 2024. However, applications will be accepted for the duration of the search. Candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, publication list, a statement explaining their research accomplishments and future plans, a statement discussing their teaching interests and approaches, and a statement addressing their views and ideas about advancing the university’s goal of recruiting and supporting a diverse student population. At least three letters of recommendation should be emailed to slogan@pitt.edu.
