Position Description
We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in machine learning and astrophysics/cosmology at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITP) at Heidelberg University to work in the Machine Learning and observational cosmology research group led by Dr. Caroline Heneka. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to an active research program on the deveopment of state-of-the-art machine learning methods for astrophysics and cosmology. Particular applications concern large radio surveys, multi-line intensity mapping and the study of the Epoch of Reionisation. The postdoc will lead the development of ML models for generative, inference (SBI) and further typical downstream tasks. The applicant is expected to have up-to-date research experience in modern machine methods and deep learning architectures. A research background in large radio surveys, computational astrophysics, or computer science in general will also be considered favourably. The researcher will have the opportunity to supervise and mentor students. The research group is internationally active in a multitude of collaborations such as the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), and is involved in NASA proposals such as the Cosmic Dawn Intensity Mapper (CDIM) and The Far-IR Spectroscopy Space Telescope (FIRSST). The successful applicant will benefit from both the vibrant physics and machine learning community in Heidelberg, where the ITP has close ties with for example the Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (ITA), the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA). Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, computer science or a related field. The initial appointment will be for 2 years, with a possible extension depending on funds. The position can start at any time agreed with the candidate. Salary is paid according to German public service scale (TV-L E13) commensurate with experience. Funds for travel, visits, equipment and publications are available, as are CPU and GPU computing resources. Heidelberg University is an equal opportunity employer. Women and members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Included Benefits Specific funds are reserved for career development of junior members in the group. In addition to the stated salary range there are employer contributions to medical and dental insurance, parental leave, and retirement benefits; the paid annual leave (without state holidays) is 30 days. Compensation Notes The monthly salary stated is according to the German public service scale TV-L E13, stage 1 to 4 commensurate with experience.
