Position Description
Job descriptionThe University of Stavanger invites applicants for a two-year position as Researcher in theoretical particle physics at the Faculty of Science. The position is vacant from September 2026.
The hired researcher will mainly research and disseminate research results in the following project FRIPRO Scattering Amplitudes: linking particles and black holes effectively (SCALE).
This projectʼs main goal is to perform precision calculations to confront the experimental data from currently-running experiments by synthesizing new tools from effective field theory, scattering amplitudes, and geometry. This is approached in two lines of research:
A) Gravitational waves from black hole mergers
B) Physics beyond the Standard Model at high-energy colliders
The position is externally funded by The Research Council of Norway.

Qualification requirements
We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed a PhD within a relevant discipline.
You must have expertise in at least two of the followring research topics:
- Theoretical particle physics
- Physics beyond the Standard Model
- Effective field theory
- Scattering amplitudes
- General relativity and black hole physics
You must be able to document active, ongoing research at a high academic level and have the potential for future high-level research in the subject area. You must have very good command of both oral and written English.
Furthermore, emphasis is placed on you having:
- experience collaborating with the professional/work sector
- contributed to ensuring that research-based knowledge is applied in society, and being able to demonstrate results from innovation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization of research
- the ability to build and maintain professional networks – regionally, nationally, and internationally
- high work capacity, and being curious and motivated to contribute to the development of academic and interdisciplinary collaboration at the university
- good cooperation and communication skills, and the ability to contribute to a constructive working environment
