Duke Title: Adjunct Instructor

Organization/Program

Duke University's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is an accelerated, 12-month teacher preparation and licensure program that prepares candidates to enter classrooms as culturally responsive educators equipped with the skills and content knowledge needed to support the learning of all students.

Position Summary

Part-Time Adjunct Faculty

  • Follow a standardized course syllabus including use of pre-developed instructional materials and program assessments for each course
  • Maintain course content materials using the University's LMS -- Canvas
  • Deliver in-person instruction
  • Effectively engage MAT teacher candidates in course content
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to students as appropriate and grade student work
  • Assess student learning in accordance to Graduate School and MAT program practices
  • Maintain professional and timely communications with students and program administration
  • Adhere to all policies in the MAT Handbook, along with all Duke University policies and procedures
  • Participate in MAT faculty orientation, training sessions, and faculty meetings, as required

Minimum Qualifications

MAT adjunct instructors embed equity, justice, and anti-racism into their teaching, modeling better practices for building learning communities that hold high expectations for all students and teachers.

  • Minimum master's degree in the teaching discipline, or a master's degree with a concentration in the teaching discipline (minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in discipline)
  • Knowledge of and experience in their selected teaching discipline, as well as experience with and the ability to use instructional technologies to support classroom activities
  • Record of teaching excellence
  • Experience in graduate education instruction 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in the teaching discipline
